Atthamh²ti ima½ dhammadesana½ satth± himavantapadese araññakuµik±ya½ viharanto m±ra½ ±rabbha kathesi.
Tasmi½ kira k±le r±j±no manusse p²¼etv± rajja½ k±renti. Atha bhagav± adhammikar±j³na½ rajje daº¹akaraºap²¼ite manusse disv± k±ruññena eva½ cintesi “sakk± nu kho rajja½ k±retu½ ahana½ agh±taya½, ajina½ aj±paya½, asoca½ asoc±paya½ dhammen±”ti, m±ro p±pim± ta½ bhagavato parivitakka½ ñatv± “samaºo gotamo ‘sakk± nu kho rajja½ k±retun’ti cintesi, id±ni rajja½ k±retuk±mo bhavissati, rajjañca n±meta½ pam±daµµh±na½, ta½ k±rente sakk± ok±sa½ labhitu½, gacch±mi uss±hamassa janess±m²”ti cintetv± satth±ra½ upasaªkamitv± ±ha– “k±retu, bhante, bhagav± rajja½, k±retu sugato rajja½ ahana½ agh±taya½, ajina½ aj±paya½, asoca½ asoc±paya½ dhammen±”ti. Atha na½ satth± “ki½ pana me tva½, p±pima, passasi, ya½ ma½ tva½ eva½ vades²”ti vatv± “bhagavat± kho, bhante, catt±ro iddhip±d± subh±vit±. ¾kaªkham±no hi bhagav± himavanta½ pabbatar±ja½ ‘suvaººan’ti adhimucceyya, tañca suvaººameva assa, ahampi kho dhanena dhanakaraº²ya½ kariss±mi, tumhe dhammena rajja½ k±ressath±”ti tena vutte–
“Pabbatassa suvaººassa, j±tar³passa kevalo;
dvitt±va n±lamekassa, iti vidv± samañcare.
“Yo dukkhamadakkhi yatonid±na½,
k±mesu so jantu katha½ nameyya;
upadhi½ viditv± saªgoti loke,
tasseva jantu vinay±ya sikkhe”ti. (Sa½. ni. 1.156)–

atho petteyyat± sukh±;
sukh± s±maññat± loke,
atho brahmaññat± sukh±.
333. “Sukha½ y±va jar±s²la½, sukh± saddh± patiµµhit±;
sukho paññ±ya paµil±bho, p±p±na½ akaraºa½ sukhan”ti.
Tattha atthamh²ti pabbajitass±pi hi c²varakaraº±dike v± adhikaraºav³pasam±dike v± gihinopi kasikamm±dike v± balavapakkhasannissitehi abhibhavan±dike v± kicce uppanne ye ta½ kicca½ nipph±detu½ v± v³pasametu½ v± sakkonti, evar³p± sukh± sah±y±ti attho. Tuµµh² sukh±ti yasm± pana gihinopi sakena asantuµµh± sandhicched±d²ni ±rabhanti, pabbajit±pi n±nappak±ra½ anesana½. Iti te sukha½ na vindantiyeva. Tasm± y± itar²tarena parittena v± vipulena v± attano santakena santuµµhi, ayameva sukh±ti attho. Puññanti maraºak±le pana yath±jjh±sayena pattharitv± katapuññakammameva sukha½. Sabbass±ti sakalassapi pana vaµµadukkhassa pah±nasaªkh±ta½ arahattameva imasmi½ loke sukha½ n±ma.
Matteyyat±ti m±tari samm± paµipatti. Petteyyat±ti pitari samm± paµipatti. Ubhayenapi m±t±pit³na½ upaµµh±nameva kathita½. M±t±pitaro hi putt±na½ anupaµµhahanabh±va½ ñatv± attano santaka½ bh³miya½ v± nidahanti, paresa½ v± vissajjenti, “m±t±pitaro na upaµµhahant²”ti nesa½ nind±pi va¹¹hati, k±yassa bhed± g³thanirayepi nibbattanti. Ye pana m±t±pitaro sakkacca½ upaµµhahanti, te tesa½ santaka½ dhanampi p±puºanti, pasa½sampi labhanti, k±yassa bhed± sagge nibbattanti. Tasm± ubhayampeta½ sukhanti vutta½. S±maññat±ti pabbajitesu samm± paµipatti. Brahmaññat±ti b±hitap±pesu buddhapaccekabuddhas±vakesu samm± paµipattiyeva. Ubhayenapi tesa½ cat³hi paccayehi paµijagganabh±vo kathito, idampi loke sukha½ n±ma kathika½.
S²lanti maºikuº¹alarattavatth±dayo hi alaªk±r± tasmi½ tasmi½ vaye µhit±na½yeva sobhanti. Na dahar±na½ alaªk±ro mahallakak±le, mahallak±na½ v± alaªk±ro daharak±le sobhati, “ummattako esa maññe”ti garahupp±danena pana dosameva janeti. Pañcas²ladasas²l±dibheda½ pana s²la½ daharass±pi mahallakass±pi sabbavayesu sobhatiyeva, “aho vat±ya½ s²lav±”ti pasa½supp±danena somanassameva ±vahati. Tena vutta½– sukha½ y±va jar± s²lanti. Saddh± patiµµhit±ti lokiyalokuttarato duvidh±pi saddh± niccal± hutv± patiµµhit±. Sukho paññ±ya paµil±bhoti lokiyalokuttarapaññ±ya paµil±bho sukho. P±p±na½ akaraºanti setugh±tavasena pana p±p±na½ akaraºa½ imasmi½ loke sukhanti attho.
Desan±vas±ne bah³na½ devat±na½ dhamm±bhisamayo ahos²ti.
