Buddh±nañhi padacetiya½ adhiµµhahitv± akkantaµµh±neyeva paññ±yati, na aññattha. Yesañcatth±ya adhiµµhita½ hoti, teyeva na½ passanti. Tesa½ pana adassanakaraºattha½ hatthi-±dayo v± akkamantu, mah±megho v± pavassatu, verambhav±t± v± paharantu, na ta½ koci makkhetu½ sakkoti. Atha br±hmaº² br±hmaºa½ ±ha– “kuhi½ so puriso”ti. “‘Imasmi½ µh±ne tiµµh±h²’ti na½ avaca½, kuhi½ nu kho so gato”ti ito cito olokento padacetiya½ disv± “ayamassa padavalañjo”ti ±ha. Evamassa diya¹¹hasahassan±µakitthipariv±r± tisso aggamahesiyo ahesu½. Tasmi½ kho pana samaye ghosakaseµµhi kukkuµaseµµhi p±v±rikaseµµh²ti kosambiya½ tayo seµµhino honti. Te upakaµµh±ya vass³pan±yik±ya pañcasatat±pase himavantato ±gantv± nagare bhikkh±ya carante disv± pas²ditv± nis²d±petv± bhojetv± paµiñña½ gahetv± catt±ro m±se attano santike vas±petv± puna vass±ratte ±gamanatth±ya paµij±n±petv± uyyojesu½. T±pas±pi tato paµµh±ya aµµha m±se himavante vasitv± catt±ro m±se tesa½ santike vasi½su. Te aparabh±ge himavantato ±gacchant± araññ±yatane eka½ mah±nigrodha½ disv± tassa m³le nis²di½su. Tesu jeµµhakat±paso cintesi– “imasmi½ rukkhe adhivatth± devat± oramattik± na bhavissati, mahesakkhenevettha devar±jena bhavitabba½ s±dhu vata sac±ya½ isigaºassa p±n²ya½ dadeyy±”ti. Sopi p±n²ya½ ad±si. T±paso nh±nodaka½ cintesi, tampi ad±si. Tato bhojana½ cintesi, tampi ad±si. Athassa etadahosi– “aya½ devar±j± amhehi cintita½ cintita½ sabba½ deti, aho vata na½ passeyy±m±”ti. So rukkhakkhandha½ pad±letv± att±na½ dassesi. Atha na½ t±pas±, “devar±ja, mahat² te sampatti, ki½ nu kho katv± aya½ te laddh±”ti pucchi½su. “M± pucchatha, ayy±”ti. “¾cikkha, devar±j±”ti. So attan± katakammassa parittakatt± lajjam±no kathetu½ na visahi. Tehi punappuna½ nipp²¼iyam±no pana “tena hi suº±th±”ti vatv± kathesi.
So kireko duggatamanusso hutv± bhati½ pariyesanto an±thapiº¹ikassa santike bhatikamma½ labhitv± ta½ niss±ya j²vika½ kappesi. Athekasmi½ uposathadivase sampatte an±thapiº¹iko vih±rato ±gantv± pucchi– “tassa bhatikassa ajjuposathadivasabh±vo kenaci kathito”ti? “Na kathito, s±m²”ti. “Tena hissa s±yam±sa½ pacath±”ti. Athassa patthodana½ paci½su. So divasa½ araññe kamma½ katv± s±ya½ ±gantv± bhatte va¹¹hetv± dinne “ch±tomh²”ti sahas± abhuñjitv±va “aññesu divasesu imasmi½ gehe ‘bhatta½ detha, s³pa½ detha, byañjana½ deth±’ti mah±kol±hala½ ahosi, ajja te sabbe nissadd± nipajji½su, mayhameva ekass±h±ra½ va¹¹hayi½su, ki½ nu kho etan”ti cintetv± pucchi– “avases± bhuñji½su, na bhuñji½s³”ti? “Na bhuñji½su, t±t±”ti. “Ki½ k±raº±”ti? Gandhatelappad²pe j±lante khuddakamahallakad±rak± sayanagat± dvatti½s±k±ra½ sajjh±yanti. Tuyha½ pana uposathadivasabh±va½ kathetu½ sati½ na karimh±. Tasm± taveva bhatta½ pakka½, na½ bhuñjass³ti. Sace id±ni uposathikena bhavitu½ vaµµati, ahampi bhaveyyanti. “Ida½ seµµhi j±n±t²”ti. “Tena hi na½ pucchath±”ti. Te gantv± seµµhi½ pucchi½su. Tassa sakaladivasa½ kamma½ katv± ch±tassa sar²re v±t± kuppi½su. So yottena ura½ bandhitv± yottakoµiya½ gahetv± parivattati. Yassa vih±re vuµµho hoti, tasseva gharadv±re piº¹±ya carati. Tesa½ pana tiººa½ seµµh²na½ upaµµh±ko sumano n±ma m±l±k±ro ahosi. So te seµµhino evam±ha– “aha½ tumh±ka½ d²gharatta½ upak±rako, satth±ra½ bhojetuk±momhi, mayhampi ekadivasa½ satth±ra½ deth±”ti. “Tena hi bhaºe sve bhojeh²”ti. “S±dhu, s±m²”ti so satth±ra½ nimantetv± sakk±ra½ paµiy±desi.
Tad± r±j± s±m±vatiy± devasika½ puppham³le aµµha kah±paºe deti. Tass± khujjuttar± n±ma d±s² sumanam±l±k±rassa santika½ gantv± nibaddha½ pupph±ni gaºh±ti. Atha na½ tasmi½ divase ±gata½ m±l±k±ro ±ha– “may± satth± nimantito, ajja pupphehi satth±ra½ p³jess±mi, tiµµha t±va, tva½ parivesan±ya sah±yik± hutv± dhamma½ sutv± avases±ni pupph±ni gahetv± gamissas²”ti S± “s±dh³”ti adhiv±sesi. Sumano buddhappamukha½ bhikkhusaªgha½ parivisitv± anumodanakaraºatth±ya patta½ aggahesi. Satth± anumodanadhammadesana½ ±rabhi. Khujjuttar±pi satthu dhammakatha½ suºant²yeva sot±pattiphale patiµµhahi. S± aññesu divasesu catt±ro kah±paºe attano gahetv± cat³hi pupph±ni gahetv± gacchati, ta½ divasa½ aµµhahipi pupph±ni gahetv± gat±.
