Vana½ chindath±ti ima½ dhammadesana½ satth± jetavane viharanto sambahule mahallake bhikkh³ ±rabbha kathesi.
Te kira gihik±le s±vatthiya½ kuµumbik± mahaddhan± aññamaññasah±yak± ekato puññ±ni karont± satthu dhammadesana½ sutv± “maya½ mahallak±, ki½ no ghar±v±sen±”ti satth±ra½ pabbajja½ y±citv± pabbaji½su, mahallakabh±vena pana dhamma½ pariy±puºitu½ asakkont± vih±rapariyante paººas±la½ k±retv± ekatova vasi½su. Piº¹±ya carant±pi yebhuyyena puttad±rasseva geha½ gantv± bhuñji½su. Tesu ekassa pur±ºadutiyik± madhurap±cik± n±ma, s± tesa½ sabbesampi upak±rik± ahosi. Kasm± sabbepi attan± laddh±h±ra½ gahetv± tass± eva gehe nis²ditv± bhuñjanti? S±pi nesa½ yath±sannihita½ s³pabyañjana½ deti. S± aññatar±b±dhena phuµµh± k±lamak±si. Atha te mahallakatther± sah±yakassa therassa paººas±l±ya sannipatitv± aññamañña½ g²v±su gahetv± “madhurap±cik± up±sik± k±lakat±”ti vilapant± rodi½su Bhikkh³hi ca samantato upadh±vitv± “ki½ ida½, ±vuso”ti puµµh±, “bhante, sah±yakassa no pur±ºadutiyik± k±lakat±, s± amh±ka½ ativiya upak±rik±. Id±ni kuto tath±r³pi½ labhiss±m±ti imin± k±raºena rod±m±”ti ±ha½su.
Bhikkh³ dhammasabh±ya½ katha½ samuµµh±pesu½. Satth± ±gantv± “k±ya nuttha, bhikkhave, etarahi kath±ya sannisinn±”ti pucchitv± “im±ya n±m±”ti vutte “na, bhikkhave, id±neva, pubbepi te k±kayoniya½ nibbattitv± samuddat²re caram±n± samudda-³miy± samudda½ pavesetv± m±rit±ya k±kiy± roditv± paridevitv± ta½ n²hariss±m±ti mukhatuº¹akehi mah±samudda½ ussiñcant± kilami½s³”ti at²ta½ ±haritv±–
“Api nu hanuk± sant±, mukhañca parisussati;
oram±ma na p±rema, p³rateva mahodadh²”ti. (J±. 1.1.146).

Ima½ k±kaj±taka½ vitth±retv± te bhikkh³ ±mantetv±, “bhikkhave, r±gadosamohavana½ niss±ya tumhehi ida½ dukkha½ patta½, ta½ vana½ chinditu½ vaµµati, eva½ niddukkh± bhavissath±”ti vatv± im± g±th± abh±si–

283. “Vana½ chindatha m± rukkha½, vanato j±yate bhaya½;
chetv± vanañca vanathañca, nibban± hotha bhikkhavo.
284. “Y±va hi vanatho na chijjati,
aºumattopi narassa n±risu;
paµibaddhamanova t±va so,
vaccho kh²rapakova m±tar²”ti.
Tattha m± rukkhanti satth±r± hi “vana½ chindath±”ti vutte tesa½ acirapabbajit±na½ “satth± amhe v±si-±d²ni gahetv± vana½ chind±pet²”ti rukkha½ chindituk±mat± uppajji. Atha ne “may± r±g±dikilesavana½ sandh±yeta½ vutta½, na rukkhe”ti paµisedhento “m± rukkhan”ti ±ha. Vanatoti yath± p±katikavanato s²h±dibhaya½ j±yati, eva½ j±ti-±dibhayampi kilesavanato j±yat²ti attho. Vanañca vanathañc±ti ettha mahant± rukkh± vana½ n±ma, khuddak± tasmi½ vane µhitatt± vanath± n±ma. Pubbuppattikarukkh± v± vana½ n±ma, apar±paruppattik± vanath± n±ma. Evameva mahantamahant± bhav±ka¹¹hanak± kiles± vana½ n±ma, pavattiya½ vip±kad±yak± vanath± n±ma. Pubbappattik± vana½ n±ma, apar±paruppattik± vanath± n±ma. Ta½ ubhaya½ catutthamaggañ±ºena chinditabba½. Ten±ha– “chetv± vanañca vanathañca, nibban± hotha bhikkhavo”ti. Nibban± hoth±ti nikkiles± hotha. Y±va hi vanathoti y±va esa aºumattopi kilesavanatho narassa n±r²su na chijjati t±va so kh²rapako vaccho m±tari viya paµibaddhamano laggacittova hot²ti attho.
Desan±vas±ne pañcapi te mahallakatther± sot±pattiphale patiµµhahi½su, sampatt±nampi s±tthik± dhammadesan± ahos²ti.
