Por±ºametanti ima½ dhammadesana½ satth± jetavane viharanto atula½ n±ma up±saka½ ±rabbha kathesi.
So hi s±vatthiv±s² up±sako pañcasata-up±sakapariv±ro ekadivasa½ te up±sake ±d±ya dhammassavanatth±ya vih±ra½ gantv± revatattherassa santike dhamma½ sotuk±mo hutv± revatatthera½ vanditv± nis²di. So pan±yasm± paµisall±n±r±mo s²ho viya ekac±ro, tasm± tena saddhi½ na kiñci kathesi. So “aya½ thero na kiñci kathes²”ti kuddho uµµh±ya s±riputtattherassa santika½ gantv± ekamanta½ µhito therena “kenatthena ±gatatth±”ti vutte “aha½, bhante, ime up±sake ±d±ya dhammassavanatth±ya revatatthera½ upasaªkami½, tassa me thero na kiñci kathesi, sv±ha½ tassa kujjhitv± idh±gato, dhamma½ me katheth±”ti ±ha. Atha thero “tena hi up±sak± nis²dath±”ti vatv± bahuka½ katv± abhidhammakatha½ kathesi. Up±sakopi “abhidhammakath± n±ma atisaºh±, thero bahu½ abhidhammameva kathesi, amh±ka½ imin± ko attho”ti kujjhitv± parisa½ ±d±ya ±nandattherassa santika½ agam±si.
Theren±pi “ki½ up±sak±”ti vutte, “bhante, maya½ dhammassavanatth±ya revatatthera½ upasaªkamimh±, tassa santike ±l±pasall±pamattampi alabhitv± kuddh± s±riputtattherassa santika½ agamimh±, sopi no atisaºha½ bahu½ abhidhammameva kathesi, ‘imin± amh±ka½ ko attho’ti etass±pi kujjhitv± idh±gamimh±, kathehi no, bhante, dhammakathan”ti. Tena hi nis²ditv± suº±th±ti thero tesa½ suviññeyya½ katv± appakameva dhamma½ kathesi. Te therassapi kujjhitv± satthu santika½ gantv± vanditv± ekamanta½ nis²di½su, atha ne satth± ±ha– “kasm± up±sak± ±gatatth±”ti? “Dhammassavan±ya, bhante”ti. “Suto pana vo dhammo”ti? “Bhante, maya½ ±dito revatatthera½ upasaªkamimh±, so amhehi saddhi½ na kiñci kathesi, tassa kujjhitv± s±riputtatthera½ upasaªkamimh±, tena no bahu abhidhammo kathito, ta½ asallakkhetv± kujjhitv± ±nandatthera½ upasaªkamimh±, tena no appamattakova dhammo kathito, tassapi kujjhitv± idh±gatamh±”ti.
Satth± tassa katha½ sutv±, “atula, por±ºato paµµh±ya ±ciººameveta½, tuºh²bh³tampi bahukathampi mandakathampi garahantiyeva. Ekanta½ garahitabboyeva v± hi pasa½sitabboyeva v± natthi R±j±nopi ekacce nindanti, ekacce pasa½santi. Mah±pathavimpi candimas³riyepi ±k±s±dayopi catuparisamajjhe nis²ditv± dhamma½ kathentampi samm±sambuddha½ ekacce garahanti, ekacce pasa½santi. Andhab±l±nañhi nind± v± pasa½s± v± appam±º±, paº¹itena pana medh±vin± nindito nindito n±ma, pasa½sito ca pasa½sito n±ma hot²”ti vatv± im± g±th± abh±si–
227. “Por±ºameta½ atula, neta½ ajjatan±miva;
nindanti tuºhim±s²na½, nindanti bahubh±ºina½;
mitabh±ºimpi nindanti, natthi loke anindito.
228. “Na c±hu na ca bhavissati, na cetarahi vijjati;
ekanta½ nindito poso, ekanta½ v± pasa½sito.
229. “Ya½ ce viññ³ pasa½santi, anuvicca suve suve;
acchiddavutti½ medh±vi½, paññ±s²lasam±hita½.
230. “Nikkha½ jambonadasseva, ko ta½ ninditumarahati;
dev±pi na½ pasa½santi, brahmun±pi pasa½sito”ti.
Tattha por±ºametanti pur±ºaka½ eta½. Atul±ti ta½ up±saka½ n±mena ±lapati. Neta½ ajjatan±miv±ti ida½ nindana½ v± pasa½sana½ v± ajjatana½ adhun± uppanna½ viya na hoti. Tuºhim±s²nanti ki½ eso m³go viya badhiro viya kiñci aj±nanto viya tuºh² hutv± nisinnoti nindanti. Bahubh±ºinanti ki½ esa v±t±hatat±lapaººa½ viya taµataµ±yati, imassa kath±pariyantoyeva natth²ti nindanti. Mitabh±ºimp²ti ki½ esa suvaººahirañña½ viya attano vacana½ maññam±no eka½ v± dve v± vatv± tuºh² ahos²ti nindanti. Eva½ sabbath±pi imasmi½ loke anindito n±ma natth²ti attho. Na c±h³ti at²tepi n±hosi, an±gatepi na bhavissati.
Ya½ ce viññ³ti b±l±na½ nind± v± pasa½s± v± appam±º±, ya½ pana paº¹it± divase divase anuvicca nindak±raºa½ v± pasa½sak±raºa½ v± j±nitv± pasa½santi, acchidd±ya v± sikkh±ya acchidd±ya v± j²vitavuttiy± samann±gatatt± acchiddavutti½ dhammojapaññ±ya samann±gatatt± medh±vi½ lokiyalokuttarapaññ±ya ceva catup±risuddhis²lena ca samann±gatatt± paññ±s²lasam±hita½ pasa½santi, ta½ suvaººadosavirahita½ ghaµµanamajjanakkhama½ jambonadanikkha½ viya ko ninditumarahat²ti attho. Dev±p²ti devat±pi paº¹itamanuss±pi ta½ bhikkhu½ upaµµh±ya thomenti pasa½santi. Brahmun±p²ti na kevala½ devamanussehi, dasasahassacakkav±¼e mah±brahmun±pi esa pasa½sitoyev±ti attho.
