So kira mah±kosalassa purohito ahosi. Atha na½ pitari k±lakate r±j± pasenadi kosalo “pitu me purohito”ti g±ravena tasmi½yeva µh±ne µhapetv± tassa attano upaµµh±na½ ±gatak±le paccuggamana½ karoti, “±cariya, idha nis²dath±”ti sam±n±sana½ d±pesi. So cintesi– “aya½ r±j± mayi ativiya g±rava½ karoti, na kho pana r±j³na½ niccak±lameva sakk± citta½ gahetu½. Sam±navayeneva hi saddhi½ rajjasukha½ n±ma sukha½ hoti, ahañcamhi mahallako, pabbajitu½ me yuttan”ti. So r±j±na½ pabbajja½ anuj±n±petv± nagare bheri½ car±petv± satt±hena sabba½ attano dhana½ d±namukhe vissajjetv± b±hirakapabbajja½ pabbaji. Ta½ niss±ya dasa purisasahass±ni anupabbaji½su. So tehi saddhi½ aªgamagadh±nañca kururaµµhassa ca antare v±sa½ kappetv± ima½ ov±da½ deti, “t±t±, yassa k±mavitakk±dayo uppajjanti, so nadito ekeka½ v±lukapuµa½ uddharitv± imasmi½ okirat³”ti. Bhante, bah³ ete, ekakassa mayha½ avisayh±. Sace tumhepi ±gamissatha, visayh± bhavissant²ti. Moggall±na, ahampi ±gamiss±mi, tva½ purato y±h²ti. Thero purato gacchantova cintesi– “ete balavanto ceva bah³ ca. Sace sabbesa½ sam±gamaµµh±ne kiñci kathess±mi, sabbepi vaggavaggena uµµhaheyyun”ti attano ±nubh±vena th³laphusitaka½ deva½ vuµµh±pesi. Te th³laphusitakesu patantesu uµµh±yuµµh±ya attano attano paººas±la½ pavisi½su. Thero aggidattassa br±hmaºassa paººas±ladv±re µhatv± “aggidatt±”ti ±ha. So therassa sadda½ sutv± “ma½ imasmi½ loke n±mena ±lapitu½ samattho n±ma natthi, ko nu kho ma½ n±mena ±lapat²”ti m±nathaddhat±ya “ko eso”ti ±ha. “Aha½, br±hmaº±”ti. “Ki½ vades²”ti? “Ajja me ekaratti½ idha vasanaµµh±na½ tva½ ±cikkh±h²”ti. “Idha vasanaµµh±na½ natthi, ekassa ek±va paººas±l±”ti. “Aggidatta, manuss± n±ma manuss±na½, g±vo gunna½, pabbajit± pabbajit±na½ santika½ gacchanti, m± eva½ kari, dehi me vasanaµµh±nan”ti. “Ki½ pana tva½ pabbajito”ti? “¾ma, pabbajitomh²”ti. “Sace pabbajito, kaha½ te kh±ribhaº¹a½, ko pabbajitaparikkh±ro”ti. “Atthi me parikkh±ro, visu½ pana na½ gahetv± vicaritu½ dukkhanti abbhantareneva na½ gahetv± vicar±mi, br±hmaº±”ti. So “ta½ gahetv± vicarissas²”ti therassa kujjhi. Atha na½ so ±ha– “amhe, aggidatta, m± kujjhi, vasanaµµh±na½ me ±cikkh±h²”ti. Natthi ettha vasanaµµh±nanti. Etasmi½ pana v±lukar±simhi ko vasat²ti. Eko, n±gar±j±ti. Eta½ me deh²ti. Na sakk± d±tu½, bh±riya½ etassa kammanti. Hotu, dehi meti. Tena hi tva½ eva j±n±h²ti.
Thero v±lukar±si-abhimukho p±y±si. N±gar±j± ta½ ±gacchanta½ disv± “aya½ samaºo ito ±gacchati, na j±n±ti maññe mama atthibh±va½, dh³m±yitv± na½ m±ress±m²”ti dh³m±yi. Thero “aya½ n±gar±j± ‘ahameva dh³m±yitu½ sakkomi, aññe na sakkont²’ti maññe sallakkhet²”ti sayampi dh³m±yi. Dvinnampi sar²rato uggat± dh³m± y±va brahmalok± uµµhahi½su. Ubhopi dh³m± thera½ ab±dhetv± n±gar±j±nameva b±dhenti. N±gar±j± dh³mavega½ sahitu½ asakkonto pajjali. Theropi tejodh±tu½ sam±pajjitv± tena saddhi½yeva pajjali. Aggij±l± y±va brahmalok± uµµhahi½su. Ubhopi thera½ ab±dhetv± n±gar±j±nameva b±dhayi½su. Athassa sakalasar²ra½ ukk±hi paditta½ viya ahosi. Isigaºo oloketv± cintesi– “n±gar±j±, samaºa½ jh±peti, bhaddako vata samaºo amh±ka½ vacana½ asutv± naµµho”ti. Thero n±gar±j±na½ dametv± nibbisevana½ katv± v±lukar±simhi nis²di. N±gar±j± v±lukar±si½ bhogehi parikkhipitv± k³µ±g±rakucchipam±ºa½ phaºa½ m±petv± therassa upari dh±resi.
Isigaº± p±tova “samaºassa matabh±va½ v± amatabh±va½ v± j±niss±m±”ti therassa santika½ gantv± ta½ v±lukar±simatthake nisinna½ disv± añjali½ paggayha abhitthavant± ±ha½su– “samaºa, kacci n±gar±jena na b±dhito”ti. “Ki½ na passatha mama upariphaºa½ dh±retv± µhitan”ti? Te “acchariya½ vata bho, samaºassa evar³po n±ma n±gar±j± damito”ti thera½ pariv±retv± aµµha½su. Tasmi½ khaºe satth± ±gato. Thero satth±ra½ disv± uµµh±ya vandi. Atha na½ isayo ±ha½su– “ayampi tay± mahantataro”ti. Eso bhagav± satth±, aha½ imassa s±vakoti. Satth± v±lukar±simatthake nis²di, isigaºo “aya½ t±va s±vakassa ±nubh±vo, imassa pana ±nubh±vo k²diso bhavissat²”ti añjali½ paggayha satth±ra½ abhitthavi. Satth± aggidatta½ ±mantetv± ±ha– “aggidatta, tva½ tava s±vak±nañca upaµµh±k±nañca ov±da½ dadam±no kinti vatv± des²”ti. “Eta½ pabbata½ saraºa½ gacchatha, vana½ ±r±ma½ rukkha½ saraºa½ gacchatha. Et±ni hi saraºa½ gato sabbadukkh± pamuccat²”ti eva½ tesa½ ov±da½ damm²ti. Satth± “na kho, aggidatta, et±ni saraºa½ gato sabbadukkh± pamuccati, buddha½ dhamma½ saªgha½ pana saraºa½ gantv± sakalavaµµadukkh± pamuccat²”ti vatv± im± g±th± abh±si–

Yo c±ti ida½ akhema½ anuttama½ saraºa½ dassetv± khema½ uttama½ saraºa½ dassanattha½ ±raddha½. Tassattho– yo ca gahaµµho v± pabbajito v± “itipi so bhagav± araha½ samm±sambuddho”ti-±dika½ buddhadhammasaªgh±nussatikammaµµh±na½ niss±ya seµµhavasena buddhañca dhammañca saªghañca saraºa½ gato, tassapi ta½ saraºagamana½ aññatitthiyavandan±d²hi kuppati calati. Tassa pana acalabh±va½ dassetu½ maggena ±gatasaraºameva pak±santo catt±ri ariyasacc±ni sammappaññ±ya passat²ti ±ha. Yo hi etesa½ sacc±na½ dassanavasena et±ni saraºa½ gato, etassa eta½ saraºa½ khemañca uttamañca, so ca puggalo eta½ saraºa½ paµicca sakalasm±pi vaµµadukkh± pamuccati, tasm± eta½ kho saraºa½ khemanti-±di vutta½.
Desan±vas±ne sabbepi te isayo saha paµisambhid±hi arahatta½ patv± satth±ra½ vanditv± pabbajja½ y±ci½su. Satth±pi c²varagabbhato hattha½ pas±retv± “etha bhikkhavo, caratha brahmacariyan”ti ±ha. Te taªkhaºeyeva aµµhaparikkh±radhar± vassasaµµhikather± viya ahesu½. So ca sabbesampi aªgamagadhakururaµµhav±s²na½ sakk±ra½ ±d±ya ±gamanadivaso ahosi. Te sakk±ra½ ±d±ya ±gat± sabbepi te isayo pabbajite disv± “ki½ nu kho amh±ka½ aggidattabr±hmaºo mah±, ud±hu samaºo gotamo”ti cintetv± samaºassa gotamassa ±gatatt± “aggidattova mah±”ti maññi½su. Satth± tesa½ ajjh±saya½ oloketv±, “aggidatta, paris±ya kaªkha½ chind±”ti ±ha. So “ahampi ettakameva pacc±s²s±m²”ti iddhibalena sattakkhattu½ veh±sa½ abbhuggantv± punappuna½ oruyha satth±ra½ vanditv± “satth± me, bhante, bhagav±, s±vakohamasm²”ti vatv± s±vakatta½ pak±ses²ti.
