Ekasmiñhi samaye r±jagahaseµµhi parissayamocanatthañceva pam±dena galit±na½ ±bharaº±d²na½ rakkhaºatthañca j±lakaraº¹aka½ parikkhip±petv± gaªg±ya udakak²¼a½ k²¼i. Atheko rattacandanarukkho gaªg±ya uparit²re j±to gaªgodakena dhotam³lo patitv± tattha tattha p±s±ºesu sa½bhajjam±no vippakiri. Tato ek± ghaµappam±º± ghaµik± p±s±ºehi gha½siyam±n± udaka-³m²hi pothiyam±n± maµµh± hutv± anupubbena vuyham±n± sev±lapariyonaddh± ±gantv± tassa j±le laggi. Seµµhi “±k±sen±gantv± gaºhitu½ samatthova gaºh±t³”ti ±ha. So tattha gantv± seµµhi½ ±ha, “mah±seµµhi, mayha½ aya½ patto anucchaviko, aññesa½ n±nucchaviko, m± te appamattakassa k±raº± mama ±k±se uppatana½ rucci, dehi me pattan”ti. Bhante, ±k±se uppatitv±va gaºhath±ti. Tato n±µaputto “tena hi apetha apeth±”ti antev±sike apanetv± “±k±se uppatiss±m²”ti eka½ hatthañca p±dañca ukkhipi. Atha na½ antev±sik±, “±cariya, ki½ n±meta½ karotha, chavassa l±makassa d±rumayapattassa k±raº± paµicchannaguºena mah±janassa dassitena ko attho”ti ta½ hatthap±desu gahetv± ±ka¹¹hitv± bh³miya½ p±tesu½. So seµµhi½ ±ha– “ime, mah±seµµhi, uppatitu½ na denti, dehi me pattan”ti. Uppatitv± gaºhatha, bhanteti. Eva½ titthiy± cha divas±ni v±yamitv±pi ta½ patta½ na labhi½suyeva.
Sattame divase ±yasmato mah±moggall±nassa ca ±yasmato piº¹olabh±radv±jassa ca “r±jagahe piº¹±ya cariss±m±”ti gantv± ekasmi½ piµµhip±s±ºe µhatv± c²vara½ p±rupanak±le dhuttak± katha½ samuµµh±pesu½ “ambho pubbe cha satth±ro loke ‘maya½ arahantamh±’ti vicari½su., R±jagahaseµµhino pana ajja sattamo divaso patta½ uss±petv± ‘sace arah± atthi, ±k±sen±gantv± gaºh±t³’ti vadantassa, ekopi ‘aha½ arah±’ti ±k±se uppatanto natthi. Ajja no loke arahant±na½ natthibh±vo ñ±to”ti. Ta½ katha½ sutv± ±yasm± mah±moggall±no ±yasmanta½ piº¹olabh±radv±ja½ ±ha– “suta½ te, ±vuso bh±radv±ja, imesa½ vacana½, ime buddhassa s±sana½ pariggaºhant± viya vadanti. Tvañca mahiddhiko mah±nubh±vo, gaccha ta½ patta½ ±k±sena gantv± gaºh±h²”ti. ¾vuso mah±moggall±na, tva½ iddhimant±na½ aggo, tva½ eta½ gaºh±hi, tayi pana aggaºhante aha½ gaºhiss±m²ti. “Gaºh±vuso”ti vutte ±yasm± piº¹olabh±radv±jo abhiññ±p±daka½ catutthajjh±na½ sam±pajjitv± uµµh±ya tig±vuta½ piµµhip±s±ºa½ p±dantena paµicch±dento tulapicu viya ±k±se uµµh±petv± r±jagahanagarassa upari sattakkhattu½ anupariy±yi. Thero seµµhissa gehamatthake aµµh±si. Ta½ disv± seµµhi urena nipajjitv± “otaratha s±m²”ti vatv± ±k±sato otiººa½ thera½ nis²d±petv± patta½ ot±r±petv± catumadhurapuººa½ katv± therassa ad±si. Thero patta½ gahetv± vih±r±bhimukho p±y±si. Athassa ye araññagat± v± suññ±g±ragat± v± ta½ p±µih±riya½ n±ddasa½su. Te sannipatitv±, “bhante, amh±kampi p±µih±riya½ dasseh²”ti thera½ anubandhi½su. So tesa½ tesa½ p±µih±riya½ dassetv± vih±ra½ agam±si.
Satth± ta½ anubandhitv± unn±dentassa mah±janassa sadda½ sutv±, “±nanda, kasseso saddo”ti pucchitv±, “bhante, piº¹olabh±radv±jena ±k±se uppatitv± candanapatto gahito, tassa santike eso saddo”ti sutv± bh±radv±ja½ pakkos±petv± “sacca½ kira tay± eva½ katan”ti pucchitv± “sacca½, bhante”ti vutte, “kasm± te, bh±radv±ja, eva½ katan”ti thera½ garahitv± ta½ patta½ khaº¹±khaº¹a½ bhed±petv± bhikkh³na½ añjanapisanatth±ya d±petv± p±µih±riyassa akaraºatth±ya s±vak±na½ sikkh±pada½ (c³¼ava. 252) paññ±pesi.
Titthiy± “samaºo kira gotamo ta½ patta½ bhed±petv± p±µih±riyassa akaraºatth±ya s±vak±na½ sikkh±pada½ paññ±pes²”ti sutv± “samaºassa gotamassa s±vak± paññatta½ sikkh±pada½ j²vitahetupi n±tikkamanti, samaºopi gotamo ta½ rakkhissateva. Id±ni amhehi ok±so laddho”ti nagarav²th²su ±rocent± vicari½su “maya½ attano guºa½ rakkhant± pubbe d±rumayapattassa k±raº± attano guºa½ mah±janassa na dassayimh±, samaºassa gotamassa s±vak± pattakamattassa k±raº± attano guºa½ mah±janassa dassesu½. Samaºo gotamo attano paº¹itat±ya patta½ bhed±petv± sikkh±pada½ paññ±pesi, id±ni maya½ teneva saddhi½ p±µih±riya½ kariss±m±”ti.
R±j± bimbis±ro ta½ katha½ sutv± satthu santika½ gantv± “tumhehi kira, bhante, p±µih±riyassa akaraºatth±ya s±vak±na½ sikkh±pada½ paññattan”ti? “¾ma, mah±r±j±”ti. Id±ni titthiy± “tumhehi saddhi½ p±µih±riya½ kariss±m±”ti vadanti, ki½ id±ni karissath±ti? “Tesu karontesu kariss±mi, mah±r±j±”ti. Nanu tumhehi sikkh±pada½ paññattanti. N±ha½, mah±r±ja, attano sikkh±pada½ paññ±pesi½, ta½ mameva s±vak±na½ paññattanti. Tumhe µhapetv± aññattha sikkh±pada½ paññatta½ n±ma hoti, bhanteti. Tena hi, mah±r±ja, tamevettha paµipucch±mi, “atthi pana te, mah±r±ja, vijite uyy±nan”ti. “Atthi, bhante”ti. “Sace te, mah±r±ja, uyy±ne mah±jano amb±d²ni kh±deyya, kimassa kattabban”ti? “Daº¹o, bhante”ti. “Tva½ pana kh±ditu½ labhas²”ti? “¾ma, bhante, mayha½ daº¹o natthi, aha½ attano santaka½ kh±ditu½ labh±m²”ti. “Mah±r±ja, yath± tava tiyojanasatike rajje ±º± pavattati, attano uyy±ne amb±d²ni kh±dantassa daº¹o natthi, aññesa½ atthi, eva½ mamapi cakkav±¼akoµisatasahasse ±º± pavattati, attano sikkh±padapaññattiy± atikkamo n±ma natthi, aññesa½ pana atthi, kariss±maha½ p±µih±riyan”ti. Titthiy± ta½ katha½ sutv± “id±namh± naµµh±, samaºena kira gotamena s±vak±na½yeva sikkh±pada½ paññatta½, na attano. Sayameva kira p±µih±riya½ kattuk±mo, ki½ nu kho karom±”ti mantayi½su.
R±j± satth±ra½ pucchi– “bhante, kad± p±µih±riya½ karissath±”ti. “Ito catum±saccayena ±s±¼hipuººam±ya½, mah±r±j±”ti. “Kattha karissatha, bhante”ti “S±vatthi½ niss±ya, mah±r±j±”ti. “Kasm± pana satth± eva½ d³raµµh±na½ apadis²”ti? “Yasm± ta½ sabbabuddh±na½ mah±p±µih±riyakaraºaµµh±na½, apica mah±janassa sannip±tanatth±yapi d³raµµh±nameva apadis²”ti. Titthiy± ta½ katha½ sutv± “ito kira catunna½ m±s±na½ accayena samaºo gotamo s±vatthiya½ p±µih±riya½ karissati, id±ni ta½ amuñcitv±va anubandhiss±ma, mah±jano amhe disv± ‘ki½ idan’ti pucchissati. Athassa vakkh±ma ‘maya½ samaºena gotamena saddhi½ p±µih±riya½ kariss±m±’ti vadimh±. So pal±yati, mayamassa pal±yitu½ adatv± anubandh±m±”ti. Satth± r±jagahe piº¹±ya caritv± nikkhami. Titthiy±pissa pacchatova nikkhamitv± bhattakiccaµµh±ne vasanti. Vasitaµµh±ne punadivase p±tar±sa½ karonti. Te manussehi “kimidan”ti pucchit± heµµh± cintitaniy±meneva ±rocesu½ Mah±janopi “p±µih±riya½ passiss±m±”ti anubandhi.
Satth± anupubbena s±vatthi½ p±puºi. Titthiy±pi tena saddhi½yeva gantv± upaµµh±ke sam±dapetv± satasahassa½ labhitv± khadirathambhehi maº¹apa½ k±retv± n²luppalehi ch±d±petv± “idha p±µih±riya½ kariss±m±”ti nis²di½su. R±j± pasenadi kosalo satth±ra½ upasaªkamitv±, “bhante, titthiyehi maº¹apo k±rito, ahampi tumh±ka½ maº¹apa½ kariss±m²”ti. “Ala½, mah±r±ja, atthi mayha½ maº¹apak±rako”ti. “Bhante, ma½ µhapetv± ko añño k±tu½ sakkhissat²”ti? “Sakko, devar±j±”ti. “Kaha½ pana, bhante, p±µih±riya½ karissath±”ti? “Kaº¹ambarukkham³le, mah±r±j±”ti. Titthiy± “ambarukkham³le kira p±µih±riya½ karissat²”ti sutv± attano upaµµh±k±na½ ±rocetv± yojanabbhantare µh±ne antamaso tadahuj±tampi ambapotaka½ upp±µetv± araññe khip±pesu½.
Satth± ±s±¼hipuººamadivase antonagara½ p±visi. Raññopi uyy±nap±lo kaº¹o n±ma eka½ piªgalakipillikehi katapattapuµassa antare mahanta½ ambapakka½ disv± tassa gandharasalobhena sampatante v±yase pal±petv± rañño kh±danatth±ya ±d±ya gacchanto antar±magge satth±ra½ disv± cintesi– “r±j± ima½ amba½ kh±ditv± mayha½ aµµha v± so¼asa v± kah±paºe dadeyya, ta½ me ekattabh±vepi j²vitavuttiy± n±la½. Satth± ±nandatthera½ olokesi Athassa thero catumah±r±jadattiya½ patta½ n²haritv± hatthe µhapesi. Satth± patta½ upan±metv± ambapakka½ paµiggahetv± tattheva nis²dan±k±ra½ dassesi. Thero c²vara½ paññ±petv± ad±si. Athassa tasmi½ nisinne thero p±n²ya½ pariss±vetv± ambapakka½ madditv± p±naka½ katv± ad±si. Satth± ambap±naka½ pivitv± kaº¹a½ ±ha– “ima½ ambaµµhi½ idheva pa½su½ viy³hitv± ropeh²”ti. So tath± ak±si. Satth± tassa upari hattha½ dhovi. Hatthe dhovitamatteyeva naªgalas²samattakkhandho hutv± ubbedhena paºº±sahattho ambarukkho uµµhahi. Cat³su dis±su ekek±, uddha½ ek±ti pañca mah±s±kh± paºº±sahatth± ahesu½. So t±vadeva pupphaphalasañchanno hutv± ekekasmi½ µh±ne paripakka-ambapiº¹idharo ahosi. Pacchato ±gacchant± bhikkh³ ambapakk±ni kh±dant± eva ±gami½su. R±j± “evar³po kira ambarukkho uµµhito”ti sutv± “m± na½ koci chind²”ti ±rakkha½ µhapesi. So pana kaº¹ena ropitatt± kaº¹ambarukkhotveva paññ±yi. Dhuttak±pi ambapakk±ni kh±ditv± “hare duµµhatitthiy± ‘samaºo kira gotamo kaº¹ambarukkham³le p±µih±riya½ karissat²’ti tumhehi yojanabbhantare tadahuj±t±pi ambapotak± upp±µ±pit±, kaº¹ambo n±ma ayan”ti vatv± te ucchiµµha-ambaµµh²hi pahari½su.
