Ekasmiñhi samaye satth± c±rika½ caritv± pañcasatabhikkhupariv±ro jetavana½ p±visi. R±j± vih±ra½ gantv± satth±ra½ nimantetv± punadivase ±gantukad±na½ sajjetv± “d±na½ me passant³”ti n±gare pakkosi. N±gar± ±gantv± rañño d±na½ disv± punadivase satth±ra½ nimantetv± d±na½ sajjetv± “amh±kampi d±na½, devo, passat³”ti rañño pahiºi½su. R±j± tesa½ d±na½ disv± “imehi mama d±nato uttaritara½ kata½, puna d±na½ kariss±m²”ti punadivasepi d±na½ sajjesi. N±gar±pi ta½ disv± punadivase sajjayi½su. Eva½ neva r±j± n±gare par±jetu½ sakkoti, na n±gar± r±j±na½. Atha chaµµhe v±re n±gar± sataguºa½ sahassaguºa½ va¹¹hetv± yath± na sakk± hoti “ida½ n±ma imesa½ d±ne natth²”ti vattu½, eva½ d±na½ sajjayi½su. R±j± ta½ disv± “sac±ha½ imesa½ d±nato uttaritara½ k±tu½ na sakkhiss±mi, ki½ me j²viten±”ti up±ya½ cintento nipajji. Atha na½ mallik± dev² upasaªkamitv±, “kasm±, mah±r±ja, eva½ nipannosi, kena te indriy±ni kilant±ni viy±”ti pucchi. R±j± ±ha– “na d±ni tva½, devi, j±n±s²”ti. “Na j±n±mi, dev±”ti. So tass± tamattha½ ±rocesi.
Atha na½ mallik± ±ha– “deva, m± cintayi, kaha½ tay± pathavissaro r±j± n±garehi par±jiyam±no diµµhapubbo v± sutapubbo v±, aha½ te d±na½ sa½vidahiss±m²”ti. Itissa asadisad±na½ sa½vidahituk±mat±ya eva½ vatv±, mah±r±ja, s±lakaly±ºipadarehi pañcanna½ bhikkhusat±na½ anto ±vaµµe nis²danamaº¹apa½ k±rehi, ses± bahi-±vaµµe nis²dissanti. Pañca setacchattasat±ni k±rehi, t±ni gahetv± pañcasat± hatth² pañcanna½ bhikkhusat±na½ matthake dh±rayam±n± µhassanti. Aµµha v± dasa v± rattasuvaººan±v±yo k±rehi, t± maº¹apamajjhe bhavissanti. Dvinna½ dvinna½ bhikkh³na½ antare ekek± khattiyadh²t± nis²ditv± gandhe pisissati, ekek± khattiyadh²t± b²jana½ ±d±ya dve dve bhikkh³ b²jam±n± µhassati, ses± khattiyadh²taro pise pise gandhe haritv± suvaººan±v±su pakkhipissanti, t±su ekacc± khattiyadh²taro n²luppalakal±pe gahetv± suvaººan±v±su pakkhittagandhe ±lo¼etv± v±sa½ g±h±pessanti. N±gar±nañhineva khattiyadh²taro atthi, na setacchatt±ni, na hatthino ca. Imehi k±raºehi n±gar± par±jissanti, eva½ karohi, mah±r±j±ti. R±j± “s±dhu, devi, kaly±ºa½ te kathitan”ti t±ya kathitaniy±mena sabba½ k±resi. Ekassa pana bhikkhuno eko hatthi nappahosi. Atha r±j± mallika½ ±ha– “bhadde, ekassa bhikkhuno eko hatthi nappahoti, ki½ kariss±m±”ti. “Ki½, deva, pañca hatthisat±ni natth²”ti? “Atthi, devi, avases± duµµhahatthino, te bhikkh³ disv±va verambhav±t± viya caº¹± hont²”ti. “Deva, aha½ ekassa duµµhahatthipotakassa chatta½ gahetv± tiµµhanaµµh±na½ j±n±m²”ti. “Kattha na½ µhapess±m±”ti? “Ayyassa aªgulim±lassa santike”ti. R±j± tath± k±resi. Hatthipotako v±ladhi½ antarasatthimhi pakkhipitv± ubho kaººe p±tetv± akkh²ni nimiletv± aµµh±si. Mah±jano “evar³passa n±ma caº¹ahatthino ayam±k±ro”ti hatthimeva olokesi.
R±j± buddhappamukha½ bhikkhusaªgha½ parivisitv± satth±ra½ vanditv±, “bhante, ya½ imasmi½ d±nagge kappiyabhaº¹a½ v± akappiyabhaº¹a½ v±, sabba½ ta½ tumh±kameva damm²”ti ±ha Tasmi½ pana d±ne ekadivaseneva pariccatta½ cuddasakoµidhana½ hoti. Satthu pana setacchatta½ nis²danapallaªko ±dh±rako p±dap²µhik±ti catt±ri anaggh±neva. Puna evar³pa½ katv± buddh±na½ d±na½ n±ma d±tu½ samattho n±hosi, teneva ta½ “asadisad±nan”ti paññ±yi. Ta½ kira sabbabuddh±na½ ekav±ra½ hotiyeva, sabbesa½ pana itth²yeva sa½vidahati. Rañño pana k±¼o ca juºho c±ti dve amacc± ahesu½. Tesu k±¼o cintesi– “aho r±jakulassa parih±ni, ekadivaseneva cuddasakoµidhana½ khaya½ gacchati, ime ima½ d±na½ bhuñjitv± gantv± nipann± nidd±yissanti, aho naµµha½ r±jakulan”ti. Juºho cintesi– “aho rañño d±na½ sudinna½. Na hi sakk± r±jabh±ve aµµhitena evar³pa½ d±na½ d±tu½, sabbasatt±na½ patti½ adento n±ma natthi, aha½ panida½ d±na½ anumod±m²”ti.
Satthu bhattakicc±vas±ne r±j± anumodanatth±ya patta½ gaºhi. Satth± cintesi– “raññ± mahogha½ pavattentena viya mah±d±na½ dinna½, asakkhi nu kho mah±jano citta½ pas±detu½, ud±hu no”ti. So tesa½ amacc±na½ citt±c±ra½ ñatv± “sace rañño d±n±nucchavika½ anumodana½ kariss±mi, k±¼assa muddh± sattadh± phalissati, juºho sot±pattiphale patiµµhahissat²”ti ñatv± k±¼e anukampa½ paµicca evar³pa½ d±na½ datv± µhitassa rañño catuppadika½ g±thameva vatv± uµµh±y±san± vih±ra½ gato. Bhikkh³ aªgulim±la½ pucchi½su– “na ki½ nu kho, ±vuso, duµµhahatthi½ chatta½ dh±retv± µhita½ disv± bh±y²”ti? “Na bh±yi½, ±vuso”ti. Te satth±ra½ upasaªkamitv± ±ha½su– “aªgulim±lo, bhante, añña½ by±karos²”ti. Satth± “na, bhikkhave aªgulim±lo bh±yati. Kh²º±sava-usabh±nañhi antare jeµµhaka-usabh± mama puttasadis± bhikkh³ na bh±yant²”ti vatv± br±hmaºavagge ima½ g±tham±ha–
“Usabha½ pavara½ v²ra½, mahesi½ vijit±vina½;
aneja½ nh±taka½ buddha½, tamaha½ br³mi br±hmaºan”ti. (Dha. pa. 422; su. ni. 651).
R±j±pi domanassappatto “evar³p±ya n±ma paris±ya d±na½ datv± µhitassa mayha½ anucchavika½ anumodana½ akatv± g±thameva vatv± satth± uµµh±y±san± gato. May± satthu anucchavika½ d±na½ akatv± ananucchavika½ kata½ bhavissati kappiyabhaº¹a½ adatv± akappiyabhaº¹a½ v± dinna½ bhavissati, satth±r± me kupitena bhavitabba½. Evañhi asadisad±na½ n±ma, d±n±nur³pa½ anumodana½ k±tu½ vaµµat²”ti vih±ra½ gantv± satth±ra½ vanditv± etadavoca– “ki½ nu kho me, bhante, d±tabbayuttaka½ d±na½ na dinna½, ud±hu d±n±nur³pa½ kappiyabhaº¹a½ adatv± akappiyabhaº¹ameva dinnan”ti. “Kimeta½ mah±r±j±”ti? “Na me tumhehi d±n±nucchavik± anumodan± kat±”ti? “Mah±r±ja, anucchavikameva te d±na½ dinna½. Etañhi asadisad±na½ n±ma, ekassa buddhassa ekav±rameva sakk± d±tu½, puna evar³pa½ n±ma d±na½ duddadan”ti. “Atha kasm±, bhante, me d±n±nur³pa½ anumodana½ na karitth±”ti? “Paris±ya asuddhatt±, mah±r±j±”ti. “Ko nu kho, bhante, paris±ya doso”ti? Athassa satth± dvinnampi amacc±na½ citt±c±ra½ ±rocetv± k±¼e anukampa½ paµicca anumodan±ya akatabh±va½ ±cikkhi. R±j± “sacca½ kira te, k±¼a, eva½ cintitan”ti pucchitv± “saccan”ti vutte “tava santaka½ aggahetv± mama puttad±rehi saddhi½ mayi attano santaka½ dente tuyha½ k± p²¼±. Gaccha, bho, ya½ te may± dinna½, ta½ dinnameva hotu, raµµhato pana me nikkham±”ti ta½ raµµh± n²haritv± juºha½ pakkos±petv± “sacca½ kira te eva½ cintitan”ti pucchitv± “saccan”ti vutte, “s±dhu, m±tula, pasannosmi, tva½ mama parijana½ gahetv± may± dinnaniy±meneva satta divas±ni d±na½ deh²”ti satt±ha½ rajja½ niyy±detv± satth±ra½ ±ha– “passatha, bhante, b±lassa karaºa½, may± eva½ dinnad±ne pah±ramad±s²”ti. Satth± “±ma, mah±r±ja, b±l± n±ma parassa d±na½ anabhinanditv± duggatipar±yaº± honti, dh²r± pana paresampi d±na½ anumoditv± saggapar±yaº± eva hont²”ti vatv± ima½ g±tham±ha–

dh²ro ca d±na½ anumodam±no, teneva so hoti sukh² paratth±”ti.
Tattha kadariy±ti thaddhamaccharino. B±l±ti idhalokaparaloka½ aj±nanak±. Dh²roti paº¹ito. Sukh² paratth±ti teneva so d±n±numodanapuññena paraloke dibbasampatti½ anubhavam±no sukh² hot²ti.
Desan±vas±ne juºho sot±pattiphale patiµµhahi, sampattaparis±yapi s±tthik± dhammadesan± ahosi, juºhopi sot±panno hutv± satt±ha½ raññ± dinnaniy±meneva d±na½ ad±s²ti.
