At²tasmiñhi b±r±ºasiseµµhino gandhakum±ro n±ma putto ahosi. R±j± tassa pitari k±lakate ta½ pakkos±petv± samass±setv± mahantena sakk±rena tasseva seµµhiµµh±na½ ad±si. So tato paµµh±ya gandhaseµµh²ti paññ±yi. Athassa bhaº¹±g±riko dhanagabbhadv±ra½ vivaritv±, “s±mi, ida½ te ettaka½ pitu dhana½, ettaka½ pit±mah±d²nan”ti n²haritv± dassesi. So ta½ dhanar±si½ oloketv± ±ha– “ki½ pana te ima½ dhana½ gahetv± na gami½s³”ti. “S±mi, dhana½ gahetv± gat± n±ma natthi. Attan± kata½ kusal±kusalameva hi ±d±ya satt± gacchant²”ti. So cintesi– “te b±lat±ya dhana½ saºµh±petv± pah±ya gat±, aha½ paneta½ gahetv±va gamiss±m²”ti. Eva½ pana cintento “d±na½ v± dass±mi, p³ja½ v± kariss±m²”ti acintetv± “ida½ sabba½ kh±ditv±va gamiss±m²”ti cintesi. Mah±jano mañc±timañce bandhitv± sannipati. Sopi satasahassagghanake nh±nakoµµhake satasahassagghanake phalake nis²ditv± so¼asahi gandhodakaghaµehi nhatv± ta½ s²hapañjara½ vivaritv± tasmi½ pallaªke nis²di. Athassa tasmi½ ±sittak³padh±ne ta½ p±ti½ µhapetv± satasahassagghanaka½ bhojana½ va¹¹hesu½. So n±µakaparivuto evar³p±ya sampattiy± ta½ bhojana½ bhuñjati. Aparena samayena eko g±mikamanusso attano paribbay±haraºattha½ d±ru-±d²ni y±nake pakkhipitv± nagara½ gantv± sah±yakassa gehe niv±sa½ gaºhi. Tad± pana puººamadivaso hoti. “Gandhaseµµhino bhuñjanal²¼a½ olokent³”ti nagare bheri½ car±pesi. Atha na½ sah±yako ±ha– “samma, gandhaseµµhino te bhuñjanal²¼a½ diµµhapubban”ti. “Na diµµhapubba½, samm±”ti. “Tena hi ehi, gacch±ma, aya½ nagare bher² carati, etassa mah±sampatti½ pass±m±”ti nagarav±s² janapadav±si½ gahetv± agam±si. Mah±janopi mañc±timañce abhiruhitv± passati. G±mav±s² bhattagandha½ gh±yitv±va nagarav±si½ ±ha– “mayha½ et±ya p±tiy± bhattapiº¹e pip±s± j±t±”ti. Samma, m± eta½ patthayi, na sakk± laddhunti. Samma, alabhanto na j²viss±m²ti. So ta½ paµib±hitu½ asakkonto parisapariyante µhatv± “paºam±mi te, s±m²”ti tikkhattu½ mah±sadda½ nicch±retv± “ko eso”ti vutte aha½, s±m²ti. “Kimetan”ti. “Aya½ eko g±mav±s² tumh±ka½ p±tiya½ bhattapiº¹e pip±sa½ up±desi, eka½ bhattapiº¹a½ d±peth±”ti. “Na sakk± laddhun”ti. “Ki½, samma, suta½ te”ti? “Suta½ me, apica labhanto j²viss±mi, alabhantassa me maraºa½ bhavissat²”ti. So punapi viravi– “aya½ kira, s±mi, alabhanto marissati, j²vitamassa deth±”ti. Ambho bhattapiº¹o n±ma satampi agghati, satadvayampi agghati. Yo yo y±cati, tassa tassa dadam±no aha½ ki½ bhuñjiss±m²ti? S±mi, aya½ alabhanto marissati, j²vitamassa deth±ti. Na sakk±va mudh± laddhu½, yadi pana alabhanto na j²vati, t²ºi sa½vacchar±ni mama gehe bhati½ karotu, evamassa bhattap±ti½ d±pess±m²ti. G±mav±s² ta½ sutv± “eva½ hotu, samm±”ti sah±yaka½ vatv± puttad±ra½ pah±ya “bhattap±ti-atth±ya t²ºi sa½vacchar±ni bhati½ kariss±m²”ti seµµhissa geha½ p±visi. So bhati½ karonto sabbakicc±ni sakkacca½ ak±si. Gehe v± araññe v± ratti½ v± div± v± sabb±ni kattabbakamm±ni kat±neva paññ±yi½su. “Bhattabhatiko”ti ca vutte sakalanagarepi paññ±yi. Athassa divase paripuººe bhattaveyy±vaµiko “bhattabhatikassa, s±mi, divaso puººo, dukkara½ tena kata½ t²ºi sa½vacchar±ni bhati½ karontena, ekampi kamma½ na kopitapubban”ti ±ha.
Athassa seµµhi attano s±yap±tar±satth±ya dve sahass±ni, tassa p±tar±satth±ya sahassanti t²ºi sahass±ni d±petv± ±ha– “ajja mayha½ kattabba½ parih±ra½ tasseva karoth±”ti. Vatv± ca pana µhapetv± eka½ cint±maºi½ n±ma piyabhariya½ avasesajanampi “ajja tameva pariv±reth±”ti vatv± sabbasampatti½ tassa niyy±desi. So seµµhino nh±nodakena tasseva koµµhake tasmi½ phalake nisinno nhatv± tasseva niv±sanas±µake niv±setv± tasseva pallaªke nis²di. Seµµhipi nagare bheri½ car±pesi– “bhattabhatiko gandhaseµµhissa gehe t²ºi sa½vacchar±ni bhati½ katv± p±ti½ labhi, tassa bhuñjanasampatti½ olokent³”ti. Mah±jano mañc±timañce abhiruhitv± passati, g±mav±sissa olokitolokitaµµh±na½ kampan±k±rappatta½ ahosi. N±µak± pariv±retv± aµµhasu½, tassa purato bhattap±ti½ va¹¹hetv± µhapayi½su. Athassa hatthadhovanavel±ya gandham±dane eko paccekabuddho sattame divase sam±pattito vuµµh±ya “kattha nu kho ajja bhikkh±c±ratth±ya gacch±m²”ti upadh±rento bhattabhatika½ addasa. Atha so “aya½ t²ºi sa½vacchar±ni bhati½ katv± bhattap±ti½ labhi, atthi nu kho etassa saddh±, natth²”ti upadh±rento “atth²”ti ñatv± “saddh±pi ekacce saªgaha½ k±tu½ na sakkonti, sakkhissati nu kho me saªgaha½ k±tun”ti cintetv± “sakkhissati ceva mama ca saªgahakaraºa½ niss±ya mah±sampatti½ labhissat²”ti ñatv± c²vara½ p±rupitv± pattam±d±ya veh±sa½ abbhuggantv± parisantarena gantv± tassa purato µhitameva att±na½ dassesi.
So paccekabuddha½ disv± cintesi– “aha½ pubbe adinnabh±vena ekiss± bhattap±tiy± atth±ya t²ºi sa½vacchar±ni paragehe bhati½ ak±si½, id±ni me ida½ bhatta½ eka½ rattindiva½ rakkheyya, sace pana na½ ayyassa dass±mi, anek±nipi kappakoµisahass±ni rakkhissati ayyasseva na½ dass±m²”ti. So t²ºi sa½vacchar±ni bhati½ katv± laddhabhattap±tito ekapiº¹ampi mukhe aµµhapetv± taºha½ vinodetv± sayameva p±ti½ ukkhipitv± paccekabuddhassa santika½ gantv± p±ti½ aññassa hatthe datv± pañcapatiµµhitena vanditv± p±ti½ v±mahatthena gahetv± dakkhiºahatthena tassa patte bhatta½ ±kiri. Paccekabuddho bhattassa upa¹¹hasesak±le patta½ hatthena pidahi. Atha na½ so ±ha– “bhante, ekova paµiviso na sakk± dvidh± k±tu½, m± ma½ idhalokena saªgaºhatha, paralokena saªgahameva karotha, s±vasesa½ akatv± niravasesameva dass±m²”ti. Attano hi thokampi anavasesetv± dinna½ niravasesad±na½ n±ma, ta½ mahapphala½ hoti. So tath± karonto sabba½ datv± puna vanditv± ±ha– “bhante, eka½ bhattap±ti½ niss±ya t²ºi sa½vacchar±ni me paragehe bhati½ karontena dukkha½ anubh³ta½, id±ni me nibbattanibbattaµµh±ne sukhameva hotu, tumhehi diµµhadhammasseva bh±g² assan”ti. Paccekabuddho “eva½ hotu, cint±maºi viya te sabbak±madado manosaªkapp± puººacando viya p³rent³”ti anumodana½ karonto–
“Icchita½ patthita½ tuyha½, sabbameva samijjhatu;
sabbe p³rentu saªkapp±, cando pannaraso yath±.
“Icchita½ patthika½ tuyha½, khippameva samijjhatu;
sabbe p³rentu saªkapp±, maºi jotiraso yath±”ti.–

Vatv± “aya½ mah±jano y±va gandham±danapabbatagaman± ma½ passanto tiµµhat³”ti adhiµµh±ya ±k±sena gandham±dana½ agam±si.

Mah±janopi na½ passantova aµµh±si. So tattha gantv± ta½ piº¹ap±ta½ pañcasat±na½ paccekabuddh±na½ vibhajitv± ad±si. Sabbe attano pahonaka½ gaºhi½su. “Appo piº¹ap±to katha½ pahos²”ti na cintetabba½. Catt±ri hi acinteyy±ni (a. ni. 4.77) vutt±ni, tatr±ya½ paccekabuddhavisayoti. Mah±jano paccekabuddh±na½ piº¹ap±ta½ vibhajitv± diyyam±na½ disv± s±dhuk±rasahass±ni pavattesi, asanisatanip±kasaddo viya ahosi. Ta½ sutv± gandhaseµµhi cintesi– “bhattabhatiko may± dinnasampatti½ dh±retu½ n±sakkhi maññe, ten±ya½ mah±jano parih±sa½ karonto sannipatito nadat²”ti. So tappavattij±nanattha½ manusse pesesi. Te ±gantv± “sampattidh±rak± n±ma, s±mi, eva½ hont³”ti vatv± ta½ pavatti½ ±rocesu½. Seµµhi ta½ sutv±va pañcavaºº±ya p²tiy± phuµµhasar²ro hutv± “aho dukkara½ tena kata½, aha½ ettaka½ k±la½ evar³p±ya sampattiy± µhito kiñci d±tu½ n±sakkhin”ti ta½ pakkos±petv± “sacca½ kira tay± ida½ n±ma katan”ti pucchitv± “±ma, s±m²”ti vutte, “handa, sahassa½ gahetv± tava d±ne mayhampi patti½ deh²”ti ±ha. So tath± ak±si. Seµµhipissa sabba½ attano santaka½ majjhe bhinditv± ad±si.
Catasso hi sampad± n±ma– vatthusampad±, paccayasampad±, cetan±sampad±, guº±tirekasampad±ti. Tattha nirodhasam±pattiraho arah± v± an±g±m² v± dakkhiºeyyo vatthusampad± n±ma. Paccay±na½ dhammena samena uppatti paccayasampad± n±ma. D±nato pubbe d±nak±le pacch± bh±geti t²su k±lesu cetan±ya somanassasahagatañ±ºasampayuttabh±vo cetan±sampad± n±ma. Dakkhiºeyyassa sam±pattito vuµµhitabh±vo guº±tirekasampad± n±m±ti. Imassa ca kh²º±savo paccekabuddho dakkhiºeyy±, bhati½ katv± laddhabh±vena paccayo dhammato uppanno, t²su k±lesu parisuddh± cetan±, sam±pattito vuµµhitamatto paccekabuddho guº±tirekoti catassopi sampad± nipphann±. Et±sa½ ±nubh±vena diµµheva dhamme mah±sampatti½ p±puºanti. Tasm± so seµµhino santik± sampatti½ labhi. Aparabh±ge ca r±j±pi imin± katakamma½ sutv± ta½ pakkos±petv± sahassa½ datv± patti½ gahetv± tuµµham±naso mahanta½ bhogakkhandha½ datv± seµµhiµµh±na½ ad±si. Bhattabhatikaseµµh²tissa n±ma½ ak±si. So gandhaseµµhin± saddhi½ sah±yo hutv± ekato kh±danto pivanto y±vat±yuka½ µhatv± tato cuto devaloke nibbattitv± eka½ buddhantara½ dibbasampatti½ anubhavitv± imasmi½ buddhupp±de s±vatthiya½ s±riputtattherass³paµµh±kakule paµisandhi½ gaºhi. Athassa m±t± laddhagabbhaparih±r± katip±haccayena “aho vat±ha½ pañcasatehi bhikkh³hi saddhi½ s±riputtattherassa satarasabhojana½ datv± k±s±yavatthanivatth± suvaººasaraka½ ±d±ya ±sanapariyante nisinn± tesa½ bhikkh³na½ ucchiµµh±vasesaka½ paribhuñjeyyan”ti doha¼in² hutv± tatheva katv± doha¼a½ paµivinodesi. S± sesamaªgalesupi tath±r³pameva d±na½ datv± putta½ vij±yitv± n±maggahaºadivase “puttassa me, bhante, sikkh±pad±ni deth±”ti thera½ ±ha. Thero “kimassa n±man”ti pucchi. “Bhante, puttassa me paµisandhiggahaºato paµµh±ya imasmi½ gehe kassaci dukkha½ n±ma na bh³tapubba½, tenevassa sukhakum±roti n±ma½ bhavissat²”ti vutte tadevassa n±ma½ gahetv± sikkh±pad±ni ad±si.
Tad± evañcassa m±tu “n±ha½ mama puttassa ajjh±saya½ bhindiss±m²”ti citta½ uppajji. S± tassa kaººavijjhanamaªgal±d²supi tatheva d±na½ ad±si. Kum±ropi sattavassikak±le “icch±maha½, amma, therassa santike pabbajitun”ti ±ha. S± “s±dhu, t±ta, n±ha½ tava ajjh±saya½ bhindiss±m²”ti thera½ nimantetv± bhojetv±, “bhante, putto me pabbajitu½ icchati, im±ha½ s±yanhasamaye vih±ra½ ±ness±m²”ti thera½ uyyojetv± ñ±take sannip±tetv± “puttassa me gihik±le kattabba½ kicca½ ajjeva kariss±m±”ti vatv± putta½ alaªkaritv± mahantena sirisobhaggena vih±ra½ netv± therassa niyy±desi. Theropi ta½, “t±ta, pabbajj± n±ma dukkar± sakkhissasi abhiramitun”ti vatv± “kariss±mi vo, bhante, ov±dan”ti vutte kammaµµh±na½ datv± pabb±jesi. M±t±pitaropissa pabbajj±ya sakk±ra½ karont± antovih±reyeva satt±ha½ buddhappamukhassa bhikkhusaªghassa satarasabhojana½ datv± s±ya½ attano geha½ agama½su. Aµµhame divase s±riputtatthero bhikkhusaªghe g±ma½ paviµµhe vih±re kattabbakicca½ katv± s±maºera½ pattac²vara½ g±h±petv± g±ma½ piº¹±ya p±visi. S±maºero antar±magge m±tik±d²ni disv± paº¹itas±maºero viya pucchi. Theropi tassa tatheva by±k±si. Sakko “ki½ nu kho etan”ti olokento s±maºera½ disv± “sukhas±maºero attano upajjh±yassa pattac²vara½ datv± ‘samaºadhamma½ kariss±m²’ti nivatto, may± tattha gantu½ vaµµat²”ti cintetv± catt±ro mah±r±je pakkos±petv± “gacchatha, t±t±, vih±rass³pavane dussaddake sakuºe pal±peth±”ti uyyojesi. Thero “s±maºerena ‘satarasabhojana½ ±hareyy±th±’ti vutta½, kassa nu kho ghare sakk± laddhun”ti olokento eka½ ajjh±sayasampanna½ upaµµh±katula½ disv± tattha gantv±, “bhante, s±dhu vo kata½ ajja idh±gacchanteh²”ti tehi tuµµham±nasehi patta½ gahetv± nis²d±petv± y±gukhajjaka½ datv± y±va bhattak±la½ dhammakatha½ y±cito tesa½ s±raº²yadhammakatha½ kathetv± k±la½ sallakkhetv± desana½ niµµh±pesi. Athassa satarasabhojana½ datv± ta½ ±d±ya gantuk±ma½ thera½ disv± “bhuñjatha, bhante, aparampi te dass±m±”ti thera½ bhojetv± puna pattap³ra½ ada½su. Thero ta½ ±d±ya “s±maºero me ch±to”ti turitaturito vih±ra½ p±y±si. Ta½ divasa½ satth± p±tova nikkhamitv± gandhakuµiya½ nisinnova ±vajjesi– “ajja sukhas±maºero upajjh±yassa pattac²vara½ datv± ‘samaºadhamma½ kariss±m²’ti nivatto, nipphanna½ nu kho tassa kiccan”ti. So tiººa½yeva maggaphal±na½ pattabh±va½ disv± uttaripi upadh±rento “sakkhissat±ya½ ajja arahatta½ p±puºitu½ s±riputto pana ‘s±maºero me ch±to’ti vegena bhatta½ ±d±ya nikkhamati, sace imasmi½ arahatta½ appatte bhatta½ ±harissati, imassa antar±yo bhavissati, may± gantv± dv±rakoµµhake ±rakkha½ gaºhitu½ vaµµat²”ti cintetv± gandhakuµito nikkhamitv± dv±rakoµµhake µhatv± ±rakkha½ gaºhi.
Theropi bhatta½ ±hari. Atha na½ heµµh± vuttanayeneva catt±ro pañhe pucchi. Pañhavissajjan±vas±ne s±maºero arahatta½ p±puºi. Satth± thera½ ±mantetv± “gaccha, s±riputta, s±maºerassa te bhatta½ deh²”ti ±ha. Thero gantv± dv±ra½ ±koµesi. S±maºeropi nikkhamitv± upajjh±yassa vatta½ katv± “bhattakicca½ karoh²”ti vutte therassa bhattena anatthikabh±va½ ñatv± sattavassikakum±ro taªkhaºaññeva arahatta½ patto n²c±sanaµµh±na½ paccavekkhanto bhattakicca½ katv± patta½ dhovi. Tasmi½ k±le catt±ro mah±r±j±no ±rakkha½ vissajjesu½. Candimas³riy±pi vim±n±ni muñci½su. Sakkopi ±viñchanaµµh±ne ±rakkha½ vissajjesi. S³riyo nabhamajjha½ atikkantoyeva paññ±yi. Bhikkh³ “s±yanho paññ±yati, s±maºerena ca id±neva bhattakicca½ kata½, ki½ nu kho ajja pubbaºho balav± j±to, s±yanho mando”ti vadi½su. Satth± ±gantv± “k±ya nuttha, bhikkhave, etarahi kath±ya sannisinn±”ti pucchitv±, “bhante, ajja pubbaºho balav± j±to, s±yanho mando, s±maºerena ca id±neva bhattakicca½ kata½, atha ca pana s³riyo nabhamajjha½ atikkantoyeva paññ±yat²”ti vutte, “bhikkhave, evameva½ hoti puññavant±na½ samaºadhammakaraºak±le. Ajja hi catt±ro mah±r±j±no s±mant± ±rakkha½ gaºhi½su, candimas³riy± vim±n±ni gahetv± aµµha½su, sakko ±viñchanake ±rakkha½ gaºhi, ahampi dv±rakoµµhake ±rakkha½ gaºhi½, ajja sukhas±maºero m±tik±ya udaka½ harante, usuk±re usu½ uju½ karonte tacchake cakk±d²ni karonte disv± att±na½ dametv± arahatta½ patto”ti vatv± ima½ g±tham±ha–
