So satta divas±ni sur±madamatto hutv± sattame divase sabb±laªk±rapaµimaº¹ito hatthikkhandhavaragato nh±natittha½ gacchanto satth±ra½ piº¹±ya pavisanta½ dv±rantare disv± hatthikkhandhavaragatova s²sa½ c±letv± vanditv± pakk±mi. Satth± sita½ katv± “ko nu kho, bhante, sitap±tukaraºe het³”ti ±nandattherena puµµho sitak±raºa½ ±cikkhanto ±ha– “pass±nanda, santatimah±matta½, ajja sabb±bharaºapaµimaº¹itova mama santika½ ±gantv± catuppadikag±th±vas±ne arahatta½ patv± sattat±lamatte ±k±se nis²ditv± parinibb±yissat²”ti. Mah±jano therena saddhi½ kathentassa satthu vacana½ assosi. Tattha micch±diµµhik± cintayi½su– “passatha samaºassa gotamassa kiriya½, mukhappattameva bh±sati, ajja kira esa eva½ sur±madamatto yath±laªkatova etassa santike dhamma½ sutv± parinibb±yissati, ajjeva ta½ mus±v±dena niggaºhiss±m±”ti. Samm±diµµhik± cintesu½– “aho buddh±na½ mah±nubh±vat±, ajja buddhal²¼añceva santatimah±mattal²¼añca daµµhu½ labhiss±m±”ti.
Santatimah±mattopi nh±natitthe divasabh±ga½ udakak²¼a½ k²¼itv± uyy±na½ gantv± ±p±nabh³miya½ nis²di. S±pi itth² raªgamajjha½ otaritv± naccag²ta½ dassetu½ ±rabhi. Tass± sar²ral²¼±ya dassanattha½ satt±ha½ app±h±rat±ya ta½ divasa½ naccag²ta½ dassayam±n±ya antokucchiya½ satthakav±t± samuµµh±ya hadayama½sa½ kantitv± agama½su. S± taªkhaºaññeva mukhena ceva akkh²hi ca vivaµehi k±lamak±si. Santatimah±matto “upadh±retha nan”ti vatv± “niruddh±, s±m²”ti ca vuttamatteyeva balavasokena abhibh³to taªkhaºaññevassa satt±ha½ p²tasur± tattakap±le udakabindu viya parikkhaya½ agam±si. So “na me ima½ soka½ aññe nibb±petu½ sakkhissanti aññatra tath±gaten±”ti balak±yaparivuto s±yanhasamaye satthu santika½ gantv± vanditv± evam±ha– “bhante, ‘evar³po me soko uppanno, ta½ me tumhe nibb±petu½ sakkhissath±’ti ±gatomhi, paµisaraºa½ me hoth±”ti. Atha na½ satth± “soka½ nibb±petu½ samatthasseva santika½ ±gatosi. Imiss± hi itthiy± imin±va ±k±rena matak±le tava rodantassa paggharita-ass³ni catunna½ mah±samudd±na½ udakato atirekatar±n²”ti vatv± ima½ g±tham±ha–
“Ya½ pubbe ta½ visosehi, pacch± te m±hu kiñcana½;
majjhe ce no gahessasi, upasanto carissas²”ti. (Su. ni. 955, 1105; c³¼ani. jatukaººim±ºavapucch±niddesa 68).
G±th±pariyos±ne santatimah±matto arahatta½ patv± attano ±yusaªkh±ra½ olokento tassa appavattanabh±va½ ñatv± satth±ra½ ±ha– “bhante, parinibb±na½ me anuj±n±th±”ti. Satth± tena katakamma½ j±nantopi “mus±v±dena niggaºhanattha½ sannipatit± micch±diµµhik± ok±sa½ na labhissanti, ‘buddhal²¼añceva santatimah±mattal²¼añca passiss±m±’ti sannipatit± samm±diµµhik± imin± katakamma½ sutv± puññesu ±dara½ karissant²”ti sallakkhetv± “tena hi tay± katakamma½ mayha½ kathehi, kathento ca bh³miya½ µhito akathetv± sattat±lamatte ±k±se µhito katheh²”ti ±ha. So “s±dhu, bhante”ti satth±ra½ vanditv± ekat±lappam±ºa½ uggamma orohitv± puna satth±ra½ vanditv± uggacchanto paµip±µiy± sattat±lappam±ºe ±k±se pallaªkena nis²ditv± “suº±tha me, bhante, pubbakamman”ti vatv± ±ha–

Satth± suddhavattha½ pas±resi, dh±tuyo tattha pati½su. T± patte pakkhipitv± catumah±pathe th³pa½ k±resi “mah±jano vanditv± puññabh±g² bhavissat²”ti. Bhikkh³ dhammasabh±ya½ katha½ samuµµh±pesu½, “±vuso, santatimah±matto g±th±vas±ne arahatta½ patv± alaªkatapaµiyattoyeva ±k±se nis²ditv± parinibbuto, ki½ nu kho eta½ ‘samaºo’ti vattu½ vaµµati ud±hu br±hmaºo”ti. Satth± ±gantv± “k±ya nuttha, bhikkhave, etarahi kath±ya sannisinn±”ti pucchitv± “im±ya n±m±”ti vutte, “bhikkhave, mama putta½ ‘samaºo’tipi vattu½ vaµµati, ‘br±hmaºo’tipi vattu½ vaµµatiyev±”ti vatv± dhamma½ desento ima½ g±tham±ha–

santo danto niyato brahmac±r²;
sabbesu bh³tesu nidh±ya daº¹a½,
so br±hmaºo so samaºo sa bhikkh³”ti.
Tattha alaªkatoti vatth±bharaºehi paµimaº¹ito. Tassattho– vatth±laªk±r±d²hi alaªkato cepi puggalo k±y±d²hi sama½ careyya, r±g±div³pasamena santo indriyadamanena danto catumagganiyamena niyato seµµhacariy±ya brahmac±r² k±yadaº¹±d²na½ oropitat±ya sabbesu bh³tesu nidh±ya daº¹a½. So evar³po b±hitap±patt± br±hmaºotipi samitap±patt± samaºotipi bhinnakilesatt± bhikkh³tipi vattabboyev±ti.
