Yo daº¹en±ti ima½ dhammadesana½ satth± ve¼uvane viharanto mah±moggall±natthera½ ±rabbha kathesi.
Ekasmiñhi samaye titthiy± sannipatitv± mantesu½– “j±n±th±vuso, ‘kena k±raºena samaºassa gotamassa l±bhasakk±ro mah± hutv± nibbatto’ti Maya½ na j±n±ma, tumhe pana j±n±th±ti. ¾ma, j±n±ma, mah±moggall±na½ n±ma eka½ niss±ya uppanno. So hi devaloka½ gantv± devat±hi katakamma½ pucchitv± ±gantv± manuss±na½ katheti ‘ida½ n±ma katv± evar³pa½ sampatti½ labhant²’ti. Niraye nibbatt±nampi kamma½ pucchitv± ±gantv± manuss±na½ katheti ‘ida½ n±ma katv± evar³pa½ dukkha½ anubhavant²’ti. Manuss± tassa katha½ sutv± mahanta½ l±bhasakk±ra½ abhiharanti, sace ta½ m±retu½ sakkhiss±ma, so l±bhasakk±ro amh±ka½ nibbattissat²”ti. Te “attheko up±yo”ti sabbe ekacchand± hutv± “ya½kiñci katv± ta½ m±r±pess±m±”ti attano upaµµh±ke sam±dapetv± kah±paºasahassa½ labhitv± purisagh±takamma½ katv± carante core pakkos±petv± “mah±moggall±natthero n±ma k±¼asil±ya½ vasati, tattha gantv± ta½ m±reth±”ti tesa½ kah±paºe ada½su. Cor± dhanalobhena sampaµicchitv± “thera½ m±ress±m±”ti gantv± tassa vasanaµµh±na½ pariv±resu½. Thero tehi parikkhittabh±va½ ñatv± kuñcikacchiddena nikkhamitv± pakk±mi. Te cor± ta½ divasa½ thera½ adisv± punekadivasa½ gantv± parikkhipi½su. Thero ñatv± kaººik±maº¹ala½ bhinditv± ±k±sa½ pakkhandi. Eva½ te paµhamam±sepi majjhimam±sepi thera½ gahetu½ n±sakkhi½su. Pacchimam±se pana sampatte thero attan± katakammassa ±ka¹¹hanabh±va½ ñatv± na apagacchi. Cor± gantv± thera½ gahetv± taº¹ulakaºamatt±nissa aµµh²ni karont± bhindi½su. Atha na½ “mato”ti saññ±ya ekasmi½ gumbapiµµhe khipitv± pakkami½su.
Thero “satth±ra½ passitv±va parinibb±yiss±m²”ti attabh±va½ jh±naveµhanena veµhetv± thira½ katv± ±k±sena satthu santika½ gantv± satth±ra½ vanditv±, “bhante, parinibb±yiss±m²”ti ±ha. “Parinibb±yissasi, moggall±n±”ti? “¾ma, bhante”ti. “Kattha gantv±”ti? “K±¼asil±padesa½, bhante”ti. Tena hi, moggall±na, mayha½ dhamma½ kathetv± y±hi. T±disassa hi me s±vakassa id±ni dassana½ natth²ti. So “eva½ kariss±mi, bhante”ti satth±ra½ vanditv± ±k±sa½ uppatitv± parinibb±nadivase s±riputtatthero viya n±nappak±r± iddhiyo katv± dhamma½ kathetv± satth±ra½ vanditv± k±¼asil±µavi½ gantv± parinibb±yi. “Thera½ kira cor± m±resun”ti ayampi kath± sakalajambud²pe patthari. R±j± aj±tasattu core pariyesanatth±ya carapurise payojesi. Tesupi coresu sur±p±ne sura½ pivantesu eko ekassa piµµhi½ paharitv± p±tesi. Bhikkh³ dhammasabh±ya½ katha½ samuµµh±pesu½– “mah±moggall±natthero attano ananur³pameva maraºa½ patto”ti. Satth± ±gantv± “k±ya nuttha, bhikkhave, etarahi kath±ya sannisinn±”ti pucchitv± “im±ya n±m±”ti vutte, “bhikkhave, moggall±no imasseva attabh±vassa ananur³pa½ maraºa½ patto, pubbe pana tena katassa kammassa anur³pameva maraºa½ patto”ti vatv± “ki½ panassa, bhante, pubbakamman”ti puµµho vitth±retv± kathesi–

S± katip±hameva te upaµµhahitv± pacch± tesa½ dassanampi anicchant² “na sakk± tava m±t±pit³hi saddhi½ ekaµµh±ne vasitun”ti ujjh±yitv± tasmi½ attano katha½ aggaºhante tassa bahigatak±le makaciv±kakhaº¹±ni ca y±gupheºañca gahetv± tattha tattha ±kiritv± ten±gantv± “ki½ idan”ti puµµh± ±ha– “imesa½ andhamahallak±na½ eta½ kamma½, sabba½ geha½ kiliµµha½ karont± vicaranti, na sakk± etehi saddhi½ ekaµµh±ne vasitun”ti. Eva½ t±ya na½ punappuna½ kathayam±n±ya evar³popi p³ritap±ram² satto m±t±pit³hi saddhi½ bhijji. So “hotu, j±niss±mi nesa½ kattabban”ti te bhojetv±, “ammat±t±, asukaµµh±ne n±ma tumh±ka½ ñ±tak± ±gamana½ pacc±s²santi, tattha gamiss±m±”ti te y±naka½ ±ropetv± ±d±ya gacchanto aµavimajjha½ pattak±le, “t±ta, rasmiyo gaºh±tha, g±vo patodasaññ±ya gamissanti, imasmi½ µh±ne cor± vasanti, aha½ otar±m²”ti pitu hatthe rasmiyo datv± otaritv± gacchanto sadda½ parivattetv± cor±na½ uµµhitasaddamak±si. M±t±pitaro sadda½ sutv± “cor± uµµhit±”ti saññ±ya, “t±ta, maya½ mahallak±, tva½ att±nameva rakkh±h²”ti ±ha½su. So m±t±pitaro tath±viravantepi corasadda½ karonto koµµetv± m±retv± aµaviya½ khipitv± pacc±gami.
Satth± ida½ tassa pubbakamma½ kathetv±, “bhikkhave, moggall±no ettaka½ kamma½ katv± anekavassasatasahass±ni niraye paccitv± vip±k±vasesena attabh±vasate evameva koµµetv± sa½cuººito maraºa½ patto. Eva½ moggall±nena attano kamm±nur³pameva maraºa½ laddha½, pañcahi corasatehi saddhi½ labhi½su. Appaduµµhesu hi padussanto dasahi k±raºehi anayabyasana½ p±puº±tiyev±”ti vatv± anusandhi½ ghaµetv± dhamma½ desento im± g±th± abh±si–

dasannamaññatara½ µh±na½, khippameva nigacchati.
138. “Vedana½ pharusa½ j±ni½, sar²rassa va bhedana½;
garuka½ v±pi ±b±dha½, cittakkhepa½ va p±puºe.
139. “R±jato v± upasagga½, abbhakkh±na½ va d±ruºa½;
parikkhaya½ va ñ±t²na½, bhog±na½ va pabhaªgura½.

Tattha adaº¹es³ti k±yadaº¹±dirahitesu kh²º±savesu. Appaduµµhes³ti paresu v± attani v± nirapar±dhesu. Dasannamaññatara½ µh±nanti dasasu dukkhak±raºesu aññatara½ k±raºa½. Vedananti s²sarog±dibheda½ pharusa½ vedana½. J±ninti kicch±dhigatassa dhanassa j±ni½. Bhedananti hatthacched±dika½ sar²rabhedana½. Garukanti pakkhahata-ekacakkhukap²µhasappikuº²bh±vakuµµharog±dibheda½ garuk±b±dha½ v±. Cittakkhepanti umm±da½. Upasagganti yasavilopasen±patiµµh±n±di-acchindan±dika½ r±jato upasagga½ v±. Abbhakkh±nanti adiµµha-asuta-acintitapubba½ “ida½ sandhicched±dikamma½, ida½ v± r±j±par±dhitakamma½ tay± katan”ti evar³pa½ d±ruºa½ abbhakkh±na½ v±. Parikkhaya½ va ñ±t²nanti attano avassayo bhavitu½ samatth±na½ ñ±t²na½ parikkhaya½ v±. Pabhaªguranti pabhaªgubh±va½ p³tibh±va½. Ya½ hissa gehe dhañña½, ta½ p³tibh±va½ ±pajjati, suvaººa½ aªg±rabh±va½, mutt± kapp±saµµhibh±va½, kah±paºa½ kap±lakhaº¹±dibh±va½, dvipadacatuppad± k±ºakuº±dibh±vanti attho. Aggi ¹ahat²ti ekasa½vacchare dvattikkhattu½ aññasmi½ ¹±hake avijjam±nepi asani-aggi v± patitv± ¹ahati, attanova dhammat±ya uµµhito p±vako v± ¹ahatiyeva. Nirayanti diµµheva dhamme imesa½ dasanna½ µh±n±na½ aññatara½ patv±pi eka½sena sampar±ye pattabba½ dassetu½ “niraya½ sopapajjat²”ti vutta½.
