Aya½ dhammadesan± kattha bh±sit±ti? S±vatthiya½. Ka½ ±rabbh±ti? Cakkhup±latthera½.

S±vatthiya½ kira mah±suvaººo n±ma kuµumbiko ahosi a¹¹ho mahaddhano mah±bhogo aputtako. So ekadivasa½ nh±natittha½ nhatv± natv± ±gacchanto antar±magge sampannapattas±kha½ eka½ vanappati½ disv± “aya½ mahesakkh±ya devat±ya pariggahito bhavissat²”ti tassa heµµh±bh±ga½ sodh±petv± p±k±raparikkhepa½ k±r±petv± v±luka½ okir±petv± dhajapaµ±ka½ uss±petv± vanappati½ alaªkaritv± añjali½ karitv± “sace putta½ v± dh²tara½ v± labheyya½, tumh±ka½ mah±sakk±ra½ kariss±m²”ti patthana½ katv± pakk±mi.
Athassa na cirasseva bhariy±ya kucchiya½ gabbho patiµµh±si. S± gabbhassa patiµµhitabh±va½ ñatv± tassa ±rocesi. So tass± gabbhassa parih±ramad±si. S± dasam±saccayena putta½ vij±yi. Ta½ n±maggahaºadivase seµµhi attan± p±lita½ vanappati½ niss±ya laddhatt± tassa p±loti n±ma½ ak±si. S± aparabh±ge aññampi putta½ labhi. Tassa c³¼ap±loti n±ma½ katv± itarassa mah±p±loti n±ma½ ak±si. Te vayappatte gharabandhanena bandhi½su. Aparabh±ge m±t±pitaro k±lamaka½su. Sabbampi vibhava½ itareyeva vic±ri½su.
Tasmi½ samaye satth± pavattitavaradhammacakko anupubben±gantv± an±thapiº¹ikena mah±seµµhin± catupaºº±sakoµidhana½ vissajjetv± k±rite jetavanamah±vih±re viharati mah±jana½ saggamagge ca mokkhamagge ca patiµµh±payam±no. Tath±gato hi m±tipakkhato as²tiy±, pitipakkhato as²tiy±ti dve-as²tiñ±tikulasahassehi k±rite nigrodhamah±vih±re ekameva vass±v±sa½ vasi, an±thapiº¹ikena k±rite jetavanamah±vih±re ek³nav²sativass±ni, vis±kh±ya sattav²satikoµidhanaparicc±gena k±rite pubb±r±me chabbass±n²ti dvinna½ kul±na½ guºamahattata½ paµicca s±vatthi½ niss±ya pañcav²sativass±ni vass±v±sa½ vasi. An±thapiº¹ikopi vis±kh±pi mah±-up±sik± nibaddha½ divasassa dve v±re tath±gatassa upaµµh±na½ gacchanti, gacchant± ca “daharas±maºer± no hatthe olokessant²”ti tucchahatth± na gatapubb±. Purebhatta½ gacchant± kh±dan²yabhojan²y±d²ni gahetv±va gacchanti, pacch±bhatta½ gacchant± pañca bhesajj±ni aµµha ca p±n±ni. Nivesanesu pana tesa½ dvinna½ dvinna½ bhikkhusahass±na½ nicca½ paññatt±san±neva honti. Annap±nabhesajjesu yo ya½ icchati, tassa ta½ yathicchitameva sampajjati. Tesu an±thapiº¹ikena ekadivasampi satth± pañha½ na pucchitapubbo. So kira “tath±gato buddhasukhum±lo khattiyasukhum±lo, ‘bah³pak±ro me, gahapat²’ti mayha½ dhamma½ desento kilameyy±”ti satthari adhimattasinehena pañha½ na pucchati. Satth± pana tasmi½ nisinnamatteyeva “aya½ seµµhi ma½ arakkhitabbaµµh±ne rakkhati. Ahañhi kappasatasahass±dhik±ni catt±ri asaªkhyeyy±ni alaªkatapaµiyatta½ attano s²sa½ chinditv± akkh²ni upp±µetv± hadayama½sa½ upp±µetv± p±ºasama½ puttad±ra½ pariccajitv± p±ramiyo p³rento paresa½ dhammadesanatthameva p³resi½. Esa ma½ arakkhitabbaµµh±ne rakkhat²”ti eka½ dhammadesana½ kathetiyeva.
Tad± s±vatthiya½ satta manussakoµiyo vasanti. Tesu satthu dhammakatha½ sutv± pañcakoµimatt± manuss± ariyas±vak± j±t±, dvekoµimatt± manuss± puthujjan±. Tesu ariyas±vak±na½ dveyeva kicc±ni ahesu½– purebhatta½ d±na½ denti, pacch±bhatta½ gandham±l±dihatth± vatthabhesajjap±nak±d²ni g±h±petv± dhammassavanatth±ya gacchanti. Athekadivasa½ mah±p±lo ariyas±vake gandham±l±dihatthe vih±ra½ gacchante disv± “aya½ mah±jano kuhi½ gacchat²”ti pucchitv± “dhammassavan±y±”ti sutv± “ahampi gamiss±m²”ti gantv± satth±ra½ vanditv± parisapariyante nis²di.
Buddh± ca n±ma dhamma½ desent± saraºas²lapabbajj±d²na½ upanissaya½ oloketv± ajjh±sayavasena dhamma½ desenti, tasm± ta½ divasa½ satth± tassa upanissaya½ oloketv± dhamma½ desento anupubbikatha½ kathesi. Seyyathida½– d±nakatha½, s²lakatha½, saggakatha½, k±m±na½ ±d²nava½, ok±ra½ sa½kilesa½, nekkhamme ±nisa½sa½ pak±sesi. Ta½ sutv± mah±p±lo kuµumbiko cintesi– “paraloka½ gacchanta½ puttadh²taro v± bh±taro v± bhog± v± n±nugacchanti, sar²rampi attan± saddhi½ na gacchati, ki½ me ghar±v±sena pabbajiss±m²”ti. So desan±pariyos±ne satth±ra½ upasaªkamitv± pabbajja½ y±ci. Atha na½ satth±– “atthi te koci ±pucchitabbayuttako ñ±t²”ti ±ha. “Kaniµµhabh±t± me atthi, bhante”ti. “Tena hi ta½ ±pucch±h²”ti. So “s±dh³”ti sampaµicchitv± satth±ra½ vanditv± geha½ gantv± kaniµµha½ pakkos±petv±– “t±ta, ya½ mayha½ imasmi½ gehe saviññ±ºakampi aviññ±ºakampi dhana½ kiñci atthi, sabba½ ta½ tava bh±ro, paµipajj±hi nan”ti. “Tumhe pana ki½ karissath±”ti ±ha. “Aha½ satthu santike pabbajiss±m²”ti. “Ki½ kathesi bh±tika, tva½ me m±tari mat±ya m±t± viya, pitari mate pit± viya laddho, gehe te mah±vibhavo, sakk± geha½ ajjh±vasanteheva puññ±ni k±tu½ m± eva½ karitth±”ti. “T±ta, aha½ satthu dhammadesana½ sutv± ghar±v±se vasitu½ na sakkomi. Satth±r± hi atisaºhasukhuma½ tilakkhaºa½ ±ropetv± ±dimajjhapariyos±nakaly±ºo dhammo desito, na sakk± so ag±ramajjhe vasantena p³retu½ pabbajiss±mi, t±t±”ti. “Bh±tika, taruº±yeva t±vattha, mahallakak±le pabbajissath±”ti. “T±ta, mahallakassa hi attano hatthap±d±pi anassav± honti, na attano vase vattanti, kimaªga½ pana ñ±tak±, sv±ha½ tava katha½ na karomi, samaºapaµipatti½yeva p³ress±mi”.
“Jar±jajjarit± honti, hatthap±d± anassav±;
yassa so vihatatth±mo, katha½ dhamma½ carissati”.–

Pabbajiss±mev±ha½, t±t±ti tassa viravantasseva satthu santika½ gantv± pabbajja½ y±citv± laddhapabbajj³pasampado ±cariyupajjh±y±na½ santike pañca vass±ni vasitv± vuµµhavasso pav±retv± satth±ramupasaªkamitv± vanditv± pucchi– “bhante, imasmi½ s±sane kati dhur±n²”ti? “Ganthadhura½, vipassan±dhuranti dveyeva dhur±ni bhikkh³”ti. “Katama½ pana, bhante, ganthadhura½, katama½ vipassan±dhuran”ti? “Attano paññ±nur³pena eka½ v± dve v± nik±ye sakala½ v± pana tepiµaka½ buddhavacana½ uggaºhitv± tassa dh±raºa½, kathana½, v±cananti ida½ ganthadhura½ n±ma, sallahukavuttino pana pantasen±san±bhiratassa attabh±ve khayavaya½ paµµhapetv± s±taccakiriyavasena vipassana½ va¹¹hetv± arahattaggahaºanti ida½ vipassan±dhura½ n±m±”ti. “Bhante, aha½ mahallakak±le pabbajito ganthadhura½ p³retu½ na sakkhiss±mi, vipassan±dhura½ pana p³ress±mi, kammaµµh±na½ me katheth±”ti. Athassa satth± y±va arahatta½ kammaµµh±na½ kathesi.

So satth±ra½ vanditv± attan± sahag±mino bhikkh³ pariyesanto saµµhi bhikkh³ labhitv± tehi saddhi½ nikkhamitv± v²sayojanasatamagga½ gantv± eka½ mahanta½ paccantag±ma½ patv± tattha sapariv±ro piº¹±ya p±visi. Manuss± vattasampanne bhikkh³ disv±va pasannacitt± ±san±ni paññ±petv± nis²d±petv± paº²ten±h±rena parivisitv±, “bhante, kuhi½ ayy± gacchant²”ti pucchitv± “yath±ph±sukaµµh±na½ up±sak±”ti vutte paº¹it± manuss± “vass±v±sa½ sen±sana½ pariyesanti bhadant±”ti ñatv±, “bhante, sace ayy± ima½ tem±sa½ idha vaseyyu½, maya½ saraºesu patiµµh±ya s²l±ni gaºheyy±m±”ti ±ha½su. Tepi “maya½ im±ni kul±ni niss±ya bhavanissaraºa½ kariss±m±”ti adhiv±sesu½.
Manuss± tesa½ paµiñña½ gahetv± vih±ra½ paµijaggitv± rattiµµh±nadiv±µµh±n±ni samp±detv± ada½su. Te nibaddha½ tameva g±ma½ piº¹±ya pavisanti. Atha ne eko vejjo upasaªkamitv±, “bhante, bah³na½ vasanaµµh±ne aph±sukampi n±ma hoti, tasmi½ uppanne mayha½ katheyy±tha, bhesajja½ kariss±m²”ti pav±resi. Thero vass³pan±yikadivase te bhikkh³ ±mantetv± pucchi, “±vuso ima½ tem±sa½ katihi iriy±pathehi v²tin±messath±”ti? “Cat³hi, bhante”ti. “Ki½ paneta½, ±vuso, patir³pa½, nanu appamattehi bhavitabba½”? “Mayañhi dharam±nakassa buddhassa santik± kammaµµh±na½ gahetv± ±gat±, buddh± ca n±ma na sakk± pam±dena ±r±dhetu½, kaly±ºajjh±sayena te vo ±r±dhetabb±. Pamattassa ca n±ma catt±ro ap±y± sakagehasadis±, appamatt± hoth±vuso”ti. “Ki½ tumhe pana, bhante”ti? “Aha½ t²hi iriy±pathehi v²tin±mess±mi, piµµhi½ na pas±ress±mi, ±vuso”ti. “S±dhu, bhante, appamatt± hoth±”ti.
Atha therassa nidda½ anokkamantassa paµhamam±se atikkante majjhimam±se sampatte akkhirogo uppajji. Chiddaghaµato udakadh±r± viya akkh²hi assudh±r± paggharanti. So sabbaratti½ samaºadhamma½ katv± aruºuggamane gabbha½ pavisitv± nis²di. Bhikkh³ bhikkh±c±ravel±ya therassa santika½ gantv±, “bhikkh±c±ravel±, bhante”ti ±ha½su. “Tena hi, ±vuso, gaºhatha pattac²varan”ti. Attano pattac²vara½ g±h±petv± nikkhami. Bhikkh³ tassa akkh²hi ass³ni paggharante disv±, “kimeta½, bhante”ti pucchi½su. “Akkh²ni me, ±vuso, v±t± vijjhant²”ti. “Nanu, bhante, vejjena pav±ritamh±, tassa kathem±”ti. “S±dh±vuso”ti te vejjassa kathayi½su. So tela½ pacitv± pesesi. Thero n±s±ya tela½ ±siñcanto nisinnakova ±siñcitv± antog±ma½ p±visi. Vejjo ta½ disv± ±ha– “bhante, ayyassa kira akkh²ni v±to vijjhat²”ti? “¾ma, up±sak±”ti. “Bhante, may± tela½ pacitv± pesita½, n±s±ya vo tela½ ±sittan”ti? “¾ma, up±sak±”ti. “Id±ni k²disan”ti? “Rujjateva up±sak±”ti. Vejjo “may± ekav±reneva v³pasamanasamattha½ tela½ pahita½, ki½ nu kho rogo na v³pasanto”ti cintetv±, “bhante, nis²ditv± vo tela½ ±sitta½, nipajjitv±”ti pucchi. Thero tuºh² ahosi, punappuna½ pucchiyam±nopi na kathesi. So “vih±ra½ gantv± therassa vasanaµµh±na½ olokess±m²”ti cintetv±– “tena hi, bhante, gacchath±”ti thera½ vissajjetv± vih±ra½ gantv± therassa vasanaµµh±na½ olokento caªkamananis²danaµµh±nameva disv± sayanaµµh±na½ adisv±, “bhante, nisinnehi vo ±sitta½, nipanneh²”ti pucchi. Thero tuºh² ahosi. “M±, bhante, eva½ karittha, samaºadhammo n±ma sar²ra½ y±pentena sakk± k±tu½, nipajjitv± ±siñcath±”ti punappuna½ y±ci. “Gaccha tva½ t±v±vuso, mantetv± j±niss±m²”ti vejja½ uyyojesi. Therassa ca tattha neva ñ±t², na s±lohit± atthi, tena saddhi½ manteyya? Karajak±yena pana saddhi½ mantento “vadehi t±va, ±vuso p±lita, tva½ ki½ akkh²ni olokessasi, ud±hu buddhas±sana½? Anamataggasmiñhi sa½s±ravaµµe tava akkhik±ºassa gaºan± n±ma natthi, anek±ni pana buddhasat±ni buddhasahass±ni at²t±ni. Tesu te ekabuddhopi na pariciººo, id±ni ima½ antovassa½ tayo m±se na nipajjiss±m²ti tem±sa½ nibaddhav²riya½ kariss±mi. Tasm± te cakkh³ni nassantu v± bhijjantu v±, buddhas±sanameva dh±rehi, m± cakkh³n²”ti bh³tak±ya½ ovadanto im± g±th±yo abh±si–
