23. “Atthi bhikkhave, dhamm± k±yena pah±tabb±, no v±c±ya. Atthi, bhikkhave, dhamm± v±c±ya pah±tabb±, no k±yena. Atthi, bhikkhave, dhamm± neva k±yena pah±tabb± no v±c±ya, paññ±ya disv± [disv± disv± (s². sy±.)] pah±tabb±.
“Katame ca, bhikkhave, dhamm± k±yena pah±tabb±, no v±c±ya? Idha, bhikkhave, bhikkhu akusala½ ±panno hoti kiñci desa½ [kañci deva desa½ (s². sy±.)] k±yena. Tamena½ anuvicca viññ³ sabrahmac±r² evam±ha½su– ‘±yasm± kho akusala½ ±panno kiñci desa½ k±yena. S±dhu vat±yasm± k±yaduccarita½ pah±ya k±yasucarita½ bh±vet³’ti. So anuvicca viññ³hi sabrahmac±r²hi vuccam±no k±yaduccarita½ pah±ya k±yasucarita½ bh±veti. Ime vuccanti, bhikkhave, dhamm± k±yena pah±tabb±, no v±c±ya.
“Katame ca, bhikkhave, dhamm± v±c±ya pah±tabb±, no k±yena? Idha, bhikkhave, bhikkhu akusala½ ±panno hoti kiñci desa½ v±c±ya. Tamena½ anuvicca viññ³ sabrahmac±r² evam±ha½su– ‘±yasm± kho akusala½ ±panno kiñci desa½ v±c±ya. S±dhu vat±yasm± vac²duccarita½ pah±ya vac²sucarita½ bh±vet³’ti. So anuvicca viññ³hi sabrahmac±r²hi vuccam±no vac²duccarita½ pah±ya vac²sucarita½ bh±veti. Ime vuccanti, bhikkhave, dhamm± v±c±ya pah±tabb±, no k±yena.
“Katame ca, bhikkhave, dhamm± neva k±yena pah±tabb± no v±c±ya, paññ±ya disv± pah±tabb±? Lobho, bhikkhave, neva k±yena pah±tabbo no v±c±ya, paññ±ya disv± pah±tabbo. Doso bhikkhave…pe… moho… kodho… upan±ho… makkho… pa¼±so macchariya½, bhikkhave, neva k±yena pah±tabba½ no v±c±ya, paññ±ya disv± pah±tabba½.
“P±pik± bhikkhave, iss± neva k±yena pah±tabb± no v±c±ya, paññ±ya disv± pah±tabb±. Katam± ca, bhikkhave, p±pik± iss±? Idha, bhikkhave, ijjhati gahapatissa v± gahapatiputtassa v± dhanena v± dhaññena v± rajatena v± j±tar³pena v±. Tatr±ññatarassa d±sassa v± upav±sassa v± eva½ hoti– ‘aho vatimassa gahapatissa v± gahapatiputtassa v± na ijjheyya dhanena v± dhaññena v± rajatena v± j±tar³pena v±’ti. Samaºo v± pana br±hmaºo v± l±bh² hoti c²varapiº¹ap±tasen±sanagil±napaccayabhesajjaparikkh±r±na½. Tatr±ññatarassa samaºassa v± br±hmaºassa v± eva½ hoti– ‘aho vata ayam±yasm± na l±bh² assa c²varapiº¹ap±tasen±sanagil±napaccayabhesajjaparikkh±r±nan’ti. Aya½ vuccati, bhikkhave, p±pik± iss±.

So evamassa veditabbo– ‘n±yam±yasm± tath± paj±n±ti yath± paj±nato lobho na hoti, tath±hima½ ±yasmanta½ lobho abhibhuyya iriyati; n±yam±yasm± tath± paj±n±ti yath± paj±nato doso na hoti… moho… kodho… upan±ho… makkho… pa¼±so… macchariya½… p±pik± iss±… p±pik± icch± na hoti, tath±hima½ ±yasmanta½ p±pik± icch± abhibhuyya iriyat²’ti.
