56. Eva½ me suta½– eka½ samaya½ bhagav± r±jagahe viharati gijjhak³µe pabbate. Atha kho dve devat± abhikkant±ya rattiy± abhikkantavaºº± kevalakappa½ gijjhak³µa½ obh±setv± yena bhagav± tenupasaªkami½su; upasaªkamitv± bhagavanta½ abhiv±detv± ekamanta½ aµµha½su. Ekamanta½ µhit± kho ek± devat± bhagavanta½ etadavoca– “et±, bhante, bhikkhuniyo vimutt±”ti. Apar± devat± bhagavanta½ etadavoca– “et±, bhante, bhikkhuniyo anup±dises± suvimutt±”ti. Idamavocu½ t± devat±. Samanuñño satth± ahosi. Atha kho t± devat± “samanuñño satth±”ti bhagavanta½ abhiv±detv± padakkhiºa½ katv± tatthevantaradh±yi½su.
Atha kho bhagav± tass± rattiy± accayena bhikkh³ ±mantesi– “ima½, bhikkhave, ratti½ dve devat± abhikkant±ya rattiy± abhikkantavaºº± kevalakappa½ gijjhak³µa½ obh±setv± yen±ha½ tenupasaªkami½su; upasaªkamitv± ma½ abhiv±detv± ekamanta½ aµµha½su. Ekamanta½ µhit± kho, bhikkhave, ek± devat± ma½ etadavoca– ‘et±, bhante, bhikkhuniyo vimutt±’ti. Apar± devat± ma½ etadavoca ‘et±, bhante, bhikkhuniyo anup±dises± suvimutt±’ti. Idamavocu½, bhikkhave, t± devat±. Ida½ vatv± ma½ abhiv±detv± padakkhiºa½ katv± tatthevantaradh±yi½s³”ti.
Tena kho pana samayena ±yasm± mah±moggall±no bhagavato avid³re nisinno hoti. Atha kho ±yasmato mah±moggall±nassa etadahosi– “katames±na½ kho dev±na½ eva½ ñ±ºa½ hoti– ‘sa-up±disese v± sa-up±disesoti, anup±disese v± anup±diseso”’ti? Tena kho pana samayena tisso n±ma bhikkhu adhun±k±laªkato aññatara½ brahmaloka½ upapanno hoti. Tatr±pi na½ eva½ j±nanti– “tisso brahm± mahiddhiko mah±nubh±vo”ti.
Atha kho ±yasm± mah±moggall±no– seyyath±pi n±ma balav± puriso samiñjita½ v± b±ha½ pas±reyya, pas±rita½ v± b±ha½ samiñjeyya, evameva½– gijjhak³µe pabbate antarahito tasmi½ brahmaloke p±turahosi. Addas± kho tisso brahm± ±yasmanta½ mah±moggall±na½ d³ratova ±gacchanta½. Disv± ±yasmanta½ mah±moggall±na½ etadavoca– “ehi kho, m±risa moggall±na; sv±gata½, m±risa moggall±na! Cirassa½ kho, m±risa moggall±na, ima½ pariy±yamak±si yadida½ idh±gaman±ya. Nis²da, m±risa moggall±na, idam±sana½ paññattan”ti. Nis²di kho ±yasm± mah±moggall±no paññatte ±sane. Tissopi kho brahm± ±yasmanta½ mah±moggall±na½ abhiv±detv± ekamanta½ nis²di. Ekamanta½ nisinna½ kho tissa½ brahm±na½ ±yasm± mah±moggall±no etadavoca– “katames±na½ kho, tissa dev±na½ eva½ ñ±ºa½ hoti– ‘sa-up±disese v± sa-up±disesoti, anup±disese v± anup±diseso”’ti? “Brahmak±yik±na½ kho, m±risa moggall±na, dev±na½ eva½ ñ±ºa½ hoti– ‘sa-up±disese v± sa-up±disesoti, anup±disese v± anup±diseso”’ti.
“Sabbesaññeva kho, tissa, brahmak±yik±na½ dev±na½ eva½ ñ±ºa½ hoti– ‘sa-up±disese v± sa-up±disesoti, anup±disese v± anup±diseso”’ti? “Na kho, m±risa moggall±na, sabbesa½ brahmak±yik±na½ dev±na½ eva½ ñ±ºa½ hoti– ‘sa-up±disese v± sa-up±disesoti, anup±disese v± anup±diseso”’ti.
“Ye kho te, m±risa moggall±na, brahmak±yik± dev± brahmena ±yun± santuµµh± brahmena vaººena brahmena sukhena brahmena yasena brahmena ±dhipateyyena santuµµh±, te uttari nissaraºa½ yath±bh³ta½ nappaj±nanti. Tesa½ na eva½ ñ±ºa½ hoti– ‘sa-up±disese v± sa-up±disesoti, anup±disese v± anup±diseso’ti. Ye ca kho te, m±risa moggall±na, brahmak±yik± dev± brahmena ±yun± asantuµµh±, brahmena vaººena brahmena sukhena brahmena yasena brahmena ±dhipateyyena asantuµµh±, te ca uttari nissaraºa½ yath±bh³ta½ paj±nanti. Tesa½ eva½ ñ±ºa½ hoti– ‘sa-up±disese v± sa-up±disesoti, anup±disese v± anup±diseso”’ti.
“Idha, m±risa moggall±na, bhikkhu ubhatobh±gavimutto hoti. Tamena½ te dev± eva½ j±nanti– ‘aya½ kho ±yasm± ubhatobh±gavimutto. Y±vassa k±yo µhassati t±va na½ dakkhanti devamanuss±. K±yassa bhed± na na½ dakkhanti devamanuss±’ti. Evampi kho, m±risa moggall±na tesa½ dev±na½ ñ±ºa½ hoti– ‘sa-up±disese v± sa-up±disesoti, anup±disese v± anup±diseso”’ti.

Appeva n±ma ayam±yasm± anulomik±ni sen±san±ni paµisevam±no kaly±ºamitte bhajam±no indriy±ni samann±nayam±no– yassatth±ya kulaputt± sammadeva ag±rasm± anag±riya½ pabbajanti tadanuttara½– brahmacariyapariyos±na½ diµµheva dhamme saya½ abhiññ± sacchikatv± upasampajja vihareyy±’ti. Evampi kho, m±risa moggall±na, tesa½ dev±na½ ñ±ºa½ hoti– ‘sa-up±disese v± sa-up±disesoti, anup±disese v± anup±diseso”’ti.

Tamena½ te dev± eva½ j±nanti– ‘aya½ kho ±yasm± dhamm±nus±r² Appeva n±ma ayam±yasm± anulomik±ni sen±san±ni paµisevam±no kaly±ºamitte bhajam±no indriy±ni samann±nayam±no– yassatth±ya kulaputt± sammadeva ag±rasm± anag±riya½ pabbajanti tadanuttara½– brahmacariyapariyos±na½ diµµheva dhamme saya½ abhiññ± sacchikatv± upasampajja vihareyy±’ti. Evampi kho, m±risa moggall±na, tesa½ dev±na½ ñ±ºa½ hoti– ‘sa-up±disese v± sa-up±disesoti, anup±disese v± anup±diseso”’ti.
Atha kho ±yasm± mah±moggall±no tissassa brahmuno bh±sita½ abhinanditv± anumoditv±– seyyath±pi n±ma balav± puriso samiñjita½ v± b±ha½ pas±reyya, pas±rita½ v± b±ha½ samiñjeyya, evameva½– brahmaloke antarahito gijjhak³µe pabbate p±turahosi. Atha kho ±yasm± mah±moggall±no yena bhagav± tenupasaªkami; upasaªkamitv± bhagavanta½ abhiv±detv± ekamanta½ nis²di. Ekamanta½ nisinno kho ±yasm± mah±moggall±no y±vatako ahosi tissena brahmun± saddhi½ kath±sall±po ta½ sabba½ bhagavato ±rocesi.
“Na hi pana te, moggall±na, tisso brahm± sattama½ animittavih±ri½ puggala½ deseti”. “Etassa, bhagav±, k±lo; etassa, sugata, k±lo! Ya½ bhagav± sattama½ animittavih±ri½ puggala½ deseyya. Bhagavato sutv± bhikkh³ dh±ressant²”ti. “Tena hi, moggall±na, suº±hi, s±dhuka½ manasi karohi; bh±siss±m²”ti. “Eva½, bhante”ti kho ±yasm± mah±moggall±no bhagavato paccassosi. Bhagav± etadavoca–
“Idha, moggall±na, bhikkhu sabbanimitt±na½ amanasik±r± animitta½ cetosam±dhi½ upasampajja viharati. Tamena½ te dev± eva½ j±nanti– ‘aya½ kho ±yasm± sabbanimitt±na½ amanasik±r± animitta½ cetosam±dhi½ upasampajja viharati. Appeva n±ma ayam±yasm± anulomik±ni sen±san±ni paµisevam±no kaly±ºamitte bhajam±no indriy±ni samann±nayam±no– yassatth±ya kulaputt± sammadeva ag±rasm± anag±riya½ pabbajanti tadanuttara½– brahmacariyapariyos±na½ diµµheva dhamme saya½ abhiññ± sacchikatv± upasampajja vihareyy±’ti.
