36. Eka½ samaya½ bhagav± antar± ca ukkaµµha½ antar± ca setabya½ addh±namaggappaµipanno hoti. Doºopi suda½ br±hmaºo antar± ca ukkaµµha½ antar± ca setabya½ addh±namaggappaµipanno hoti. Addas± kho doºo br±hmaºo bhagavato p±desu cakk±ni sahass±r±ni sanemik±ni san±bhik±ni sabb±k±raparip³r±ni; disv±nassa etadahosi– “acchariya½ vata, bho, abbhuta½ vata, bho! Na vatim±ni manussabh³tassa pad±ni bhavissant²”ti!! Atha kho bhagav± magg± okkamma aññatarasmi½ rukkham³le nis²di pallaªka½ ±bhujitv± uju½ k±ya½ paºidh±ya parimukha½ sati½ upaµµhapetv±. Atha kho doºo br±hmaºo bhagavato pad±ni anugacchanto addasa bhagavanta½ aññatarasmi½ rukkham³le nisinna½ p±s±dika½ pas±dan²ya½ santindriya½ santam±nasa½ uttamadamathasamathamanuppatta½ danta½ gutta½ sa½yatindriya½ [yatindriya½ (mah±va. 257)] n±ga½. Disv±na yena bhagav± tenupasaªkami; upasaªkamitv± bhagavanta½ etadavoca–
“Devo no bhava½ bhavissat²”ti? “Na kho aha½, br±hmaºa, devo bhaviss±m²”ti. “Gandhabbo no bhava½ bhavissat²”ti? “Na kho aha½, br±hmaºa, gandhabbo bhaviss±m²”ti. “Yakkho no bhava½ bhavissat²”ti? “Na kho aha½, br±hmaºa, yakkho bhaviss±m²”ti. “Manusso no bhava½ bhavissat²”ti? “Na kho aha½, br±hmaºa, manusso bhaviss±m²”ti.
“‘Devo no bhava½ bhavissat²’ti, iti puµµho sam±no– ‘na kho aha½, br±hmaºa, devo bhaviss±m²’ti vadesi. ‘Gandhabbo no bhava½ bhavissat²’ti, iti puµµho sam±no– ‘na kho aha½, br±hmaºa, gandhabbo bhaviss±m²’ti vadesi. ‘Yakkho no bhava½ bhavissat²’ti, iti puµµho sam±no– ‘na kho aha½, br±hmaºa, yakkho bhaviss±m²’ti vadesi. ‘Manusso no bhava½ bhavissat²’ti, iti puµµho sam±no– ‘na kho aha½, br±hmaºa, manusso bhaviss±m²’ti vadesi. Atha ko carahi bhava½ bhavissat²”ti?
“Yesa½ kho aha½, br±hmaºa, ±sav±na½ appah²natt± devo bhaveyya½, te me ±sav± pah²n± ucchinnam³l± t±l±vatthukat± anabh±va½kat± ±yati½ anupp±dadhamm±. Yesa½ kho aha½, br±hmaºa, ±sav±na½ appah²natt± gandhabbo bhaveyya½… yakkho bhaveyya½… manusso bhaveyya½, te me ±sav± pah²n± ucchinnam³l± t±l±vatthukat± anabh±va½kat± ±yati½ anupp±dadhamm±. Seyyath±pi, br±hmaºa, uppala½ v± paduma½ v± puº¹ar²ka½ v± udake j±ta½ udake sa½va¹¹ha½ udak± accuggamma tiµµhati anupalitta½ udakena; evameva½ kho aha½, br±hmaºa, loke j±to loke sa½va¹¹ho loka½ abhibhuyya vihar±mi anupalitto lokena. Buddhoti ma½, br±hmaºa, dh±reh²”ti.
“Yena dev³papatyassa, gandhabbo v± vihaªgamo;
yakkhatta½ yena gaccheyya½, manussattañca abbaje;
te mayha½, ±sav± kh²º±, viddhast± vina¼²kat±.
“Puº¹ar²ka½ yath± vaggu, toyena nupalippati [nupalimpati (ka.)];
nupalipp±mi [nupalimp±mi (ka.)] lokena, tasm± buddhosmi br±hmaº±”ti. Chaµµha½.
