35. Eka½ samaya½ bhagav± r±jagahe viharati ve¼uvane kalandakaniv±pe. Atha kho vassak±ro br±hmaºo magadhamah±matto yena bhagav± tenupasaªkami; upasaªkamitv± bhagavat± saddhi½ sammodi. Sammodan²ya½ katha½ s±raº²ya½ v²tis±retv± ekamanta½ nis²di. Ekamanta½ nisinno kho vassak±ro br±hmaºo magadhamah±matto bhagavanta½ etadavoca–
“Cat³hi kho maya½, bho gotama, dhammehi samann±gata½ mah±pañña½ mah±purisa½ paññ±pema Katamehi cat³hi? Idha, bho gotama, bahussuto hoti tassa tasseva sutaj±tassa tassa tasseva kho pana bh±sitassa attha½ j±n±ti– ‘aya½ imassa bh±sitassa attho, aya½ imassa bh±sitassa attho’ti. Satim± kho pana hoti cirakatampi cirabh±sitampi sarit± anussarit± y±ni kho pana t±ni gahaµµhak±ni ki½karaº²y±ni, tattha dakkho hoti analaso, tatrup±y±ya v²ma½s±ya samann±gato ala½ k±tu½ ala½ sa½vidh±tu½. Imehi kho maya½, bho gotama, cat³hi dhammehi samann±gata½ mah±pañña½ mah±purisa½ paññ±pema. Sace me [sace pana me (s². ka.), sace me pana (p².)], bho gotama, anumoditabba½ anumodatu me bhava½ gotamo; sace pana me, bho gotama, paµikkositabba½ paµikkosatu me bhava½ gotamo”ti.
“Neva kho ty±ha½, br±hmaºa, anumod±mi na paµikkos±mi Cat³hi kho aha½, br±hmaºa, dhammehi samann±gata½ mah±pañña½ mah±purisa½ paññ±pemi. Katamehi cat³hi? Idha, br±hmaºa, bahujanahit±ya paµipanno hoti bahujanasukh±ya; bahussa janat± ariye ñ±ye patiµµh±pit±, yadida½ kaly±ºadhammat± kusaladhammat±. So ya½ vitakka½ ±kaªkhati vitakketu½ ta½ vitakka½ vitakketi, ya½ vitakka½ n±kaªkhati vitakketu½ na ta½ vitakka½ vitakketi; ya½ saªkappa½ ±kaªkhati saªkappetu½ ta½ saªkappa½ saªkappeti, ya½ saªkappa½ n±kaªkhati saªkappetu½ na ta½ saªkappa½ saªkappeti. Iti cetovasippatto hoti vitakkapathe. Catunna½ jh±n±na½ ±bhicetasik±na½ diµµhadhammasukhavih±r±na½ nik±mal±bh² hoti akicchal±bh² akasiral±bh². ¾sav±na½ khay± an±sava½ cetovimutti½ paññ±vimutti½ diµµheva dhamme saya½ abhiññ± sacchikatv± upasampajja viharati. Neva kho ty±ha½, br±hmaºa, anumod±mi na pana paµikkos±mi. Imehi kho aha½, br±hmaºa, cat³hi dhammehi samann±gata½ mah±pañña½ mah±purisa½ paññ±pem²”ti.
“Acchariya½, bho gotama, abbhuta½, bho gotama! Y±va subh±sita½ cida½ bhot± gotamena. Imehi ca maya½, bho gotama, cat³hi dhammehi samann±gata½ bhavanta½ gotama½ dh±rema; bhavañhi gotamo bahujanahit±ya paµipanno bahujanasukh±ya; bahu te [bahussa (sy±. ka½. ka.)] janat± ariye ñ±ye patiµµh±pit±, yadida½ kaly±ºadhammat± kusaladhammat±. Bhavañhi gotamo ya½ vitakka½ ±kaªkhati vitakketu½ ta½ vitakka½ vitakketi, ya½ vitakka½ n±kaªkhati vitakketu½ na ta½ vitakka½ vitakketi, ya½ saªkappa½ ±kaªkhati saªkappetu½ ta½ saªkappa½ saªkappeti, ya½ saªkappa½ n±kaªkhati saªkappetu½ na ta½ saªkappa½ saªkappeti. Bhavañhi gotamo cetovasippatto vitakkapathe. Bhavañhi gotamo catunna½ jh±n±na½ ±bhicetasik±na½ diµµhadhammasukhavih±r±na½ nik±mal±bh² akicchal±bh² akasiral±bh² Bhavañhi gotamo ±sav±na½ khay± an±sava½ cetovimutti½ paññ±vimutti½ diµµheva dhamme saya½ abhiññ± sacchikatv± upasampajja viharat²”ti.
“Addh± kho ty±ha½, br±hmaºa, ±sajja upan²ya v±c± bh±sit±. Api ca, ty±ha½ by±kariss±mi– ‘ahañhi, br±hmaºa, bahujanahit±ya paµipanno bahujanasukh±ya; bahu me [bahussa (sy±. ka½. ka.)] janat± ariye ñ±ye patiµµh±pit±, yadida½ kaly±ºadhammat± kusaladhammat±. Ahañhi, br±hmaºa, ya½ vitakka½ ±kaªkh±mi vitakketu½ ta½ vitakka½ vitakkemi, ya½ vitakka½ n±kaªkh±mi vitakketu½ na ta½ vitakka½ vitakkemi ya½ saªkappa½ ±kaªkh±mi saªkappetu½ ta½ saªkappa½ saªkappemi, ya½ saªkappa½ n±kaªkh±mi saªkappetu½ na ta½ saªkappa½ saªkappemi. Ahañhi, br±hmaºa, cetovasippatto vitakkapathe. Ahañhi, br±hmaºa, catunna½ jh±n±na½ ±bhicetasik±na½ diµµhadhammasukhavih±r±na½ nik±mal±bh² akicchal±bh² akasiral±bh². Ahañhi, br±hmaºa, ±sav±na½ khay± an±sava½ cetovimutti½ paññ±vimutti½ diµµheva dhamme saya½ abhiññ± sacchikatv± upasampajja vihar±m²”’ti.
“Yo vedi sabbasatt±na½, maccup±sappamocana½;
hita½ devamanuss±na½, ñ±ya½ dhamma½ pak±sayi;
ya½ ve disv± ca sutv± ca, pas²danti bah³ jan± [pas²dati bahujjano (s². sy±. ka½. p².)].
“Magg±maggassa kusalo, katakicco an±savo;
buddho antimas±r²ro [antimadh±rito (ka.)], “(mah±pañño) [( ) sy±. potthake natthi] mah±purisoti vuccat²”ti. Pañcama½.
