89. Eka½ samaya½ sambahul± ther± bhikkh³ kosambiya½ viharanti ghosit±r±me. Tena kho pana samayena ±yasm± khemako badarik±r±me viharati ±b±dhiko dukkhito b±¼hagil±no. Atha kho ther± bhikkh³ s±yanhasamaya½ paµisall±n± vuµµhit± ±yasmanta½ d±saka½ ±mantesu½– “ehi tva½, ±vuso d±saka, yena khemako bhikkhu tenupasaªkama; upasaªkamitv± khemaka½ bhikkhu½ eva½ vadehi– ‘ther± ta½, ±vuso khemaka, evam±ha½su– kacci te, ±vuso, khaman²ya½, kacci y±pan²ya½, kacci dukkh± vedan± paµikkamanti no abhikkamanti, paµikkamos±na½ paññ±yati no abhikkamo”’ti? “Evam±vuso”ti kho ±yasm± d±sako ther±na½ bhikkh³na½ paµissutv± yen±yasm± khemako tenupasaªkami; upasaªkamitv± ±yasmanta½ khemaka½ etadavoca– “ther± ta½, ±vuso khemaka, evam±ha½su– ‘kacci te, ±vuso, khaman²ya½…pe… no abhikkamo”’ti? “Na me, ±vuso, khaman²ya½ na y±pan²ya½…pe… abhikkamos±na½ paññ±yati no paµikkamo”ti.

Atha kho ±yasm± khemako daº¹amolubbha yena ther± bhikkh³ tenupasaªkami; upasaªkamitv± therehi bhikkh³hi saddhi½ sammodi. Sammodan²ya½ katha½ s±raº²ya½ v²tis±retv± ekamanta½ nis²di. Ekamanta½ nisinna½ kho ±yasmanta½ khemaka½ ther± bhikkh³ etadavocu½– “yameta½, ±vuso khemaka, ‘asm²’ti vadesi, kimeta½ ‘asm²’ti vadesi? R³pa½ ‘asm²’ti vadesi, aññatra r³p± ‘asm²’ti vadesi? Vedana½… sañña½… saªkh±re… viññ±ºa½ ‘asm²’ti vadesi, aññatra viññ±º± ‘asm²’ti vadesi? “Seyyath±pi, ±vuso, uppalassa v± padumassa v± puº¹ar²kassa v± gandho. Yo nu kho eva½ vadeyya– ‘pattassa gandho’ti v± ‘vaººassa [vaº¹assa (katthaci)] gandho’ti v± ‘kiñjakkhassa gandho’ti v± samm± nu kho so vadam±no vadeyy±”ti? “No heta½, ±vuso”. “Yath± katha½, pan±vuso, samm± by±karam±no by±kareyy±”ti? “‘Pupphassa gandho’ti kho, ±vuso, samm± by±karam±no by±kareyy±”ti. “Evameva khv±ha½, ±vuso, na r³pa½ ‘asm²’ti vad±mi, napi aññatra r³p± ‘asm²’ti vad±mi. Api ca me, ±vuso, pañcasu up±d±nakkhandhesu ‘asm²’ti adhigata½ ‘ayamahamasm²’ti na ca samanupass±mi”.
“Kiñc±pi, ±vuso, ariyas±vakassa pañcorambh±giy±ni sa½yojan±ni pah²n±ni bhavanti, atha khvassa hoti– ‘yo ca pañcasu up±d±nakkhandhesu anusahagato asm²ti m±no, asm²ti chando, asm²ti anusayo asam³hato. So aparena samayena pañcasu up±d±nakkhandhesu udayabbay±nupass² viharati– iti r³pa½, iti r³passa samudayo, iti r³passa atthaªgamo; iti vedan±… iti saññ±… iti saªkh±r±… iti viññ±ºa½, iti viññ±ºassa samudayo, iti viññ±ºassa atthaªgamo’ti. Tassimesu pañcasu up±d±nakkhandhesu udayabbay±nupassino viharato yopissa hoti pañcasu up±d±nakkhandhesu anusahagato ‘asm²’ti, m±no ‘asm²’ti, chando ‘asm²’ti anusayo asam³hato, sopi samuggh±ta½ gacchati.
“Seyyath±pi ±vuso, vattha½ sa½kiliµµha½ malaggahita½. Tamena½ s±mik± rajakassa anupadajju½. Tamena½ rajako ³se v± kh±re v± gomaye v± sammadditv± acche udake vikkh±leti. Kiñc±pi ta½ hoti vattha½ parisuddha½ pariyod±ta½, atha khvassa hoti yeva anusahagato ³sagandho v± kh±ragandho v± gomayagandho v± asam³hato. Tamena½ rajako s±mik±na½ deti. Tamena½ s±mik± gandhaparibh±vite karaº¹ake nikkhipanti. Yopissa hoti anusahagato ³sagandho v± kh±ragandho v± gomayagandho v± asam³hato, sopi samuggh±ta½ gacchati. Evameva kho, ±vuso, kiñc±pi ariyas±vakassa pañcorambh±giy±ni sa½yojan±ni pah²n±ni bhavanti, atha khvassa hoti yeva pañcasu up±d±nakkhandhesu anusahagato ‘asm²’ti, m±no ‘asm²’ti, chando ‘asm²’ti anusayo asam³hato. So aparena samayena pañcasu up±d±nakkhandhesu udayabbay±nupass² viharati. ‘Iti r³pa½, iti r³passa samudayo, iti r³passa atthaªgamo; iti vedan±… iti saññ±… iti saªkh±r±… iti viññ±ºa½, iti viññ±ºassa samudayo, iti viññ±ºassa atthaªgamo’ti. Tassa imesu pañcasu up±d±nakkhandhesu udayabbay±nupassino viharato yopissa hoti pañcasu up±d±nakkhandhesu anusahagato ‘asm²’ti, m±no ‘asm²’ti, chando ‘asm²’ti anusayo asam³hato, sopi samuggh±ta½ gacchat²”ti.
Eva½ vutte, ther± bhikkh³ ±yasmanta½ khemaka½ etadavocu½– “na kho [na kho pana (ka.)] maya½ ±yasmanta½ khemaka½ vihes±pekh± pucchimha, api c±yasm± khemako pahosi tassa bhagavato s±sana½ vitth±rena ±cikkhitu½ desetu½ paññ±petu½ paµµhapetu½ vivaritu½ vibhajitu½ utt±n²k±tu½. Tayida½ ±yasmat± khemakena tassa bhagavato s±sana½ vitth±rena ±cikkhita½ desita½ paññ±pita½ paµµhapita½ vivarita½ vibhajita½ utt±n²katan”ti.
