501. Eva½ me suta½– eka½ samaya½ bhagav± s±vatthiya½ viharati jetavane an±thapiº¹ikassa ±r±me. Tatra kho bhagav± bhikkh³ ±mantesi– “bhikkhavo”ti. “Bhadante”ti te bhikkh³ bhagavato paccassosu½. Bhagav± etadavoca–
“Ekamid±ha½, bhikkhave, samaya½ ukkaµµh±ya½ vihar±mi subhagavane s±lar±jam³le. Tena kho pana, bhikkhave, samayena bakassa brahmuno evar³pa½ p±paka½ diµµhigata½ uppanna½ hoti– ‘ida½ nicca½, ida½ dhuva½, ida½ sassata½, ida½ kevala½, ida½ acavanadhamma½, idañhi na j±yati na j²yati na m²yati na cavati na upapajjati, ito ca panañña½ uttari nissaraºa½ natth²’ti. Atha khv±ha½, bhikkhave, bakassa brahmuno cetas± cetoparivitakkamaññ±ya– seyyath±pi n±ma balav± puriso samiñjita½ v± b±ha½ pas±reyya, pas±rita½ v± b±ha½ samiñjeyya, evameva– ukkaµµh±ya½ subhagavane s±lar±jam³le antarahito tasmi½ brahmaloke p±turahosi½. Addas± kho ma½, bhikkhave, bako brahm± d³ratova ±gacchanta½; disv±na ma½ etadavoca– ‘ehi kho, m±risa, sv±gata½, m±risa! Cirassa½ kho, m±risa, ima½ pariy±yamak±si yadida½ idh±gaman±ya. Idañhi, m±risa, nicca½, ida½ dhuva½, ida½ sassata½, ida½ kevala½, ida½ acavanadhamma½, idañhi na j±yati na j²yati na m²yati na cavati na upapajjati. Ito ca panañña½ uttari nissaraºa½ natth²”’ti.
Eva½ vutte, aha½, bhikkhave, baka½ brahm±na½ etadavoca½ “avijj±gato vata, bho, bako brahm±; avijj±gato vata, bho, bako brahm±; yatra hi n±ma anicca½yeva sam±na½ niccanti vakkhati, addhuva½yeva sam±na½ dhuvanti vakkhati, asassata½yeva sam±na½ sassatanti vakkhati, akevala½yeva sam±na½ kevalanti vakkhati, cavanadhamma½yeva sam±na½ acavanadhammanti vakkhati; yattha ca pana j±yati j²yati m²yati cavati upapajjati tañca vakkhati– ‘idañhi na j±yati na j²yati na m²yati na cavati na upapajjat²’ti; santañca panañña½ uttari nissaraºa½ ‘natthañña½ uttari nissaraºan’ti vakkhat²”ti.
502. “Atha kho, bhikkhave, m±ro p±pim± aññatara½ brahmap±risajja½ anv±visitv± ma½ etadavoca– ‘bhikkhu, bhikkhu, metam±sado metam±sado, eso hi, bhikkhu, brahm± mah±brahm± abhibh³ anabhibh³to aññadatthudaso vasavatt² issaro katt± nimm±t± seµµho sajit± [sajjit± (sy±. ka½. ka.), sañjit± (s². p².)] vas² pit± bh³tabhaby±na½. Ahesu½ kho ye, bhikkhu, tay± pubbe samaºabr±hmaº± lokasmi½ pathav²garahak± pathav²jigucchak±, ±pagarahak± ±pajigucchak±, tejagarahak± tejajigucchak±, v±yagarahak± v±yajigucchak±, bh³tagarahak± bh³tajigucchak±, devagarahak± devajigucchak±, paj±patigarahak± paj±patijigucchak±, brahmagarahak± brahmajigucchak±– te k±yassa bhed± p±ºupacched± h²ne k±ye patiµµhit± ahesu½. Ye pana, bhikkhu, tay± pubbe samaºabr±hmaº± lokasmi½ pathav²pasa½sak± pathav±bhinandino, ±papasa½sak± ±p±bhinandino, tejapasa½sak± tej±bhinandino, v±yapasa½sak± v±y±bhinandino, bh³tapasa½sak± bh³t±bhinandino, devapasa½sak± dev±bhinandino, paj±patipasa½sak± paj±pat±bhinandino, brahmapasa½sak± brahm±bhinandino– te k±yassa bhed± p±ºupacched± paº²te k±ye patiµµhit±. Ta½ t±ha½, bhikkhu, eva½ vad±mi– ‘iªgha tva½, m±risa, yadeva te brahm± ±ha tadeva tva½ karohi, m± tva½ brahmuno vacana½ up±tivattittho’. Sace kho tva½, bhikkhu, brahmuno vacana½ up±tivattissasi, seyyath±pi n±ma puriso siri½ ±gacchanti½ daº¹ena paµippaº±meyya, seyyath±pi v± pana, bhikkhu, puriso narakappap±te papatanto hatthehi ca p±dehi ca pathavi½ vir±dheyya, eva½ sampadamida½, bhikkhu, tuyha½ bhavissati. ‘Iªgha½ tva½, m±risa, yadeva te brahm± ±ha tadeva tva½ karohi, m± tva½ brahmuno vacana½ up±tivattittho. Nanu tva½, bhikkhu, passasi brahmaparisa½ sannipatitan’ti? Iti kho ma½, bhikkhave, m±ro p±pim± brahmaparisa½ upanesi.
“Eva½ vutte, aha½, bhikkhave, m±ra½ p±pimanta½ etadavoca½– ‘j±n±mi kho t±ha½, p±pima; m± tva½ maññittho– na ma½ j±n±t²’ti. M±ro tvamasi, p±pima. Yo ceva, p±pima, brahm±, y± ca brahmaparis±, ye ca brahmap±risajj±, sabbeva tava hatthagat± sabbeva tava vasa½gat±. Tuyhañhi, p±pima, eva½ hoti– ‘esopi me assa hatthagato, esopi me assa vasa½gato’ti. Aha½ kho pana, p±pima, neva tava hatthagato neva tava vasa½gato”ti.
503. “Eva½ vutte, bhikkhave, bako brahm± ma½ etadavoca– ‘ahañhi, m±risa, nicca½yeva sam±na½ niccanti vad±mi, dhuva½yeva sam±na½ dhuvanti vad±mi, sassata½yeva sam±na½ sassatanti vad±mi, kevala½yeva sam±na½ kevalanti vad±mi, acavanadhamma½yeva sam±na½ acavanadhamman’ti vad±mi, yattha ca pana na j±yati na j²yati na m²yati na cavati na upapajjati tadev±ha½ vad±mi– ‘idañhi na j±yati na j²yati na m²yati na cavati na upapajjat²’ti. Asantañca panañña½ uttari nissaraºa½ ‘natthañña½ uttari nissaraºan’ti vad±mi. Ahesu½ kho, bhikkhu, tay± pubbe samaºabr±hmaº± lokasmi½ y±vataka½ tuyha½ kasiºa½ ±yu t±vataka½ tesa½ tapokammameva ahosi. Te kho eva½ j±neyyu½– ‘santañca panañña½ uttari nissaraºa½ atthañña½ uttari nissaraºanti, asanta½ v± añña½ uttari nissaraºa½ natthañña½ uttari nissaraºan’ti. Ta½ t±ha½, bhikkhu, eva½ vad±mi– ‘na cevañña½ uttari nissaraºa½ dakkhissasi, y±vadeva ca pana kilamathassa vigh±tassa bh±g² bhavissasi. Sace kho tva½, bhikkhu, pathavi½ ajjhosissasi, opas±yiko me bhavissasi vatthus±yiko, yath±k±makaraº²yo b±hiteyyo. Sace ±pa½… teja½… v±ya½… bh³te… deve… paj±pati½… brahma½ ajjhosissasi, opas±yiko me bhavissasi vatthus±yiko, yath±k±makaraº²yo b±hiteyyo’ti.
“Ahampi kho eva½, brahme, j±n±mi– sace pathavi½ ajjhosiss±mi, opas±yiko te bhaviss±mi vatthus±yiko, yath±k±makaraº²yo b±hiteyyo. ‘Sace ±pa½… teja½… v±ya½… bh³te… deve… paj±pati½… brahma½ ajjhosiss±mi, opas±yiko te bhaviss±mi vatthus±yiko, yath±k±makaraº²yo b±hiteyyo’ti api ca te aha½, brahme, gatiñca paj±n±mi, jutiñca paj±n±mi– eva½ mahiddhiko bako brahm±, eva½ mah±nubh±vo bako brahm±, eva½ mahesakkho bako brahm±”ti.
“Yath±katha½ pana me tva½, m±risa, gatiñca paj±n±si, jutiñca paj±n±si– ‘eva½ mahiddhiko bako brahm±, eva½ mah±nubh±vo bako brahm±, eva½ mahesakkho bako brahm±’ti?
“Y±vat± candimas³riy±, pariharanti dis± bhanti virocan±;
t±va sahassadh± loko, ettha te vattate [vattat² (s². sy±. ka½. p².)] vaso.
“Paroparañca [parovarañca (s². p².)] j±n±si, atho r±gavir±gina½;
itthabh±vaññath±bh±va½, satt±na½ ±gati½ gatin”ti.
“Eva½ kho te aha½, brahme, gatiñca paj±n±mi jutiñca paj±n±mi– ‘eva½ mahiddhiko bako brahm±, eva½ mah±nubh±vo bako brahm±, eva½ mahesakkho bako brahm±’ti.
504. “Atthi kho, brahme, añño k±yo, ta½ tva½ na j±n±si na passasi; tamaha½ j±n±mi pass±mi. Atthi kho, brahme, ±bhassar± n±ma k±yo yato tva½ cuto idh³papanno. Tassa te aticiraniv±sena s± sati pamuµµh±, tena ta½ tva½ na j±n±si na passasi; tamaha½ j±n±mi pass±mi. Evampi kho aha½, brahme, neva te samasamo abhiññ±ya, kuto n²ceyya½? Atha kho ahameva tay± bhiyyo. Atthi kho, brahme, subhakiºho n±ma k±yo, vehapphalo n±ma k±yo, abhibh³ n±ma k±yo, ta½ tva½ na j±n±si na passasi; tamaha½ j±n±mi pass±mi. Evampi kho aha½, brahme, neva te samasamo abhiññ±ya, kuto n²ceyya½? Atha kho ahameva tay± bhiyyo. Pathavi½ kho aha½, brahme, pathavito abhiññ±ya y±vat± pathaviy± pathavattena ananubh³ta½ tadabhiññ±ya pathavi½ n±pahosi½, pathaviy± n±pahosi½, pathavito n±pahosi½, pathavi½ meti n±pahosi½, pathavi½ n±bhivadi½. Evampi kho aha½, brahme, neva te samasamo abhiññ±ya, kuto n²ceyya½? “Sace kho, m±risa, sabbassa sabbattena ananubh³ta½, tadabhiññ±ya m± heva te rittakameva ahosi, tucchakameva ahos²”ti
“‘Viññ±ºa½ anidassana½ ananta½ sabbato pabha½’, ta½ pathaviy± pathavattena ananubh³ta½, ±passa ±pattena ananubh³ta½, tejassa tejattena ananubh³ta½, v±yassa v±yattena ananubh³ta½, bh³t±na½ bh³tattena ananubh³ta½, dev±na½ devattena ananubh³ta½, paj±patissa paj±patittena ananubh³ta½, brahm±na½ brahmattena ananubh³ta½, ±bhassar±na½ ±bhassarattena ananubh³ta½, subhakiºh±na½ subhakiºhattena ananubh³ta½, vehapphal±na½ vehapphalatte ananubh³ta½, abhibhussa abhibhuttena ananubh³ta½, sabbassa sabbattena ananubh³ta½”.
“Handa carahi [handa ca hi (s². p².)] te, m±risa, passa antaradh±y±m²”ti. ‘Handa carahi me tva½, brahme, antaradh±yassu, sace visahas²’ti. Atha kho, bhikkhave, bako brahm± ‘antaradh±yiss±mi samaºassa gotamassa, antaradh±yiss±mi samaºassa gotamass±’ti nevassu me sakkoti antaradh±yitu½.
“Eva½ vutte, aha½, bhikkhave, baka½ brahm±na½ etadavoca½– ‘handa carahi te brahme antaradh±y±m²’ti. ‘Handa carahi me tva½, m±risa, antaradh±yassu sace visahas²’ti. Atha kho aha½, bhikkhave, tath±r³pa½ iddh±bhisaªkh±ra½ abhisaªkh±si½– ‘ett±vat± brahm± ca brahmaparis± ca brahmap±risajj± ca saddañca me sossanti [saddameva suyyanti (ka.)], na ca ma½ dakkhant²’ti. Antarahito ima½ g±tha½ abh±si½–
“Bhavev±ha½ bhaya½ disv±, bhavañca vibhavesina½;
bhava½ n±bhivadi½ kiñci, nandiñca na up±diyin”ti.
“Atha kho, bhikkhave, brahm± ca brahmaparis± ca brahmap±risajj± ca acchariyabbhutacittaj±t± ahesu½– ‘acchariya½ vata bho, abbhuta½ vata bho! Samaºassa gotamassa mahiddhikat± mah±nubh±vat±, na ca vata no ito pubbe diµµho v±, suto v±, añño samaºo v± br±hmaºo v± eva½ mahiddhiko eva½ mah±nubh±vo yath±ya½ samaºo gotamo sakyaputto sakyakul± pabbajito. Bhavar±m±ya vata, bho, paj±ya bhavarat±ya bhavasammudit±ya sam³la½ bhava½ udabbah²’ti.
505. “Atha kho, bhikkhave, m±ro p±pim± aññatara½ brahmap±risajja½ anv±visitv± ma½ etadavoca– ‘sace kho tva½, m±risa, eva½ paj±n±si, sace tva½ eva½ anubuddho, m± s±vake upanesi, m± pabbajite; m± s±vak±na½ dhamma½ desesi, m± pabbajit±na½; m± s±vakesu gedhimak±si, m± pabbajitesu. Ahesu½ kho, bhikkhu, tay± pubbe samaºabr±hmaº± lokasmi½ arahanto samm±sambuddh± paµij±nam±n± Te s±vake upanesu½ pabbajite, s±vak±na½ dhamma½ desesu½ pabbajit±na½, s±vakesu gedhimaka½su pabbajitesu, te s±vake upanetv± pabbajite, s±vak±na½ dhamma½ desetv± pabbajit±na½, s±vakesu gedhitacitt± pabbajitesu, k±yassa bhed± p±ºupacched± h²ne k±ye patiµµhit±. Ahesu½ ye pana, bhikkhu, tay± pubbe samaºabr±hmaº± lokasmi½ arahanto samm±sambuddh± paµij±nam±n±. Te na s±vake upanesu½ na pabbajite, na s±vak±na½ dhamma½ desesu½ na pabbajit±na½, na s±vakesu gedhimaka½su na pabbajitesu, te na s±vake upanetv± na pabbajite, na s±vak±na½ dhamma½ desetv± na pabbajit±na½, na s±vakesu gedhitacitt± na pabbajitesu, k±yassa bhed± p±ºupacched± paº²te k±ye patiµµhit±. Ta½ t±ha½, bhikkhu, eva½ vad±mi– iªgha tva½, m±risa, appossukko diµµhadhammasukhavih±ramanuyutto viharassu, anakkh±ta½ kusalañhi, m±risa, m± para½ ovad±h²’ti.
“Eva½ vutte, aha½, bhikkhave, m±ra½ p±pimanta½ etadavoca½– ‘j±n±mi kho t±ha½, p±pima, m± tva½ maññittho– na ma½ j±n±t²’ti. M±ro tvamasi, p±pima. Na ma½ tva½, p±pima, hit±nukamp² eva½ vadesi; ahit±nukamp² ma½ tva½, p±pima, eva½ vadesi. Tuyhañhi, p±pima, eva½ hoti– ‘yesa½ samaºo gotamo dhamma½ desessati, te me visaya½ up±tivattissant²’ti. Asamm±sambuddh±va pana te p±pima, sam±n± samm±sambuddh±mh±ti paµij±ni½su. Aha½ kho pana, p±pima, samm±sambuddhova sam±no samm±sambuddhomh²ti paµij±n±mi. Desentopi hi, p±pima, tath±gato s±vak±na½ dhamma½ t±disova adesentopi hi, p±pima, tath±gato s±vak±na½ dhamma½ t±disova. Upanentopi hi, p±pima, tath±gato s±vake t±disova, anupanentopi hi, p±pima, tath±gato s±vake t±disova. Ta½ kissa hetu? Tath±gatassa, p±pima, ye ±sav± sa½kilesik± ponobbhavik± sadar± dukkhavip±k± ±yati½ j±tijar±maraºiy±– te pah²n± ucchinnam³l± t±l±vatthukat± anabh±va½kat± ±yati½ anupp±dadhamm±. Seyyath±pi, p±pima, t±lo matthakacchinno abhabbo puna vir³¼hiy±; evameva kho, p±pima, tath±gatassa ye ±sav± sa½kilesik± ponobbhavik± sadar± dukkhavip±k± ±yati½ j±tijar±maraºiy±– te pah²n± ucchinnam³l± t±l±vatthukat± anabh±va½kat± ±yati½ anupp±dadhamm±ti.
“Iti hida½ m±rassa ca an±lapanat±ya brahmuno ca abhinimantanat±ya, tasm± imassa veyy±karaºassa brahmanimantanika½teva adhivacanan”ti.
