Tena kho pana samayena s±tissa n±ma bhikkhuno kevaµµaputtassa evar³pa½ p±paka½ diµµhigata½ uppanna½ hoti– “tath±ha½ bhagavat± dhamma½ desita½ ±j±n±mi yath± tadevida½ viññ±ºa½ sandh±vati sa½sarati anaññan”ti. Assosu½ kho sambahul± bhikkh³– “s±tissa kira n±ma bhikkhuno kevaµµaputtassa evar³pa½ p±paka½ diµµhigata½ uppanna½– ‘tath±ha½ bhagavat± dhamma½ desita½ ±j±n±mi yath± tadevida½ viññ±ºa½ sandh±vati sa½sarati, anañña”n’ti. Atha kho te bhikkh³ yena s±ti bhikkhu kevaµµaputto tenupasaªkami½su; upasaªkamitv± s±ti½ bhikkhu½ kevaµµaputta½ etadavocu½– “sacca½ kira te, ±vuso s±ti, evar³pa½ p±paka½ diµµhigata½ uppanna½– ‘tath±ha½ bhagavat± dhamma½ desita½ ±j±n±mi yath± tadevida½ viññ±ºa½ sandh±vati sa½sarati, anañña”n’ti? “Eva½ by± kho aha½, ±vuso, bhagavat± dhamma½ desita½ ±j±n±mi yath± tadevida½ viññ±ºa½ sandh±vati sa½sarati, anaññan”ti. Atha kho te bhikkh³ s±ti½ bhikkhu½ kevaµµaputta½ etasm± p±pak± diµµhigat± vivecetuk±m± samanuyuñjanti samanug±hanti samanubh±santi– “m± eva½, ±vuso s±ti, avaca, m± bhagavanta½ abbh±cikkhi, na hi s±dhu bhagavato abbhakkh±na½, na hi bhagav± eva½ vadeyya. Anekapariy±yen±vuso s±ti, paµiccasamuppanna½ viññ±ºa½ vutta½ bhagavat±, aññatra paccay± natthi viññ±ºassa sambhavo”ti. Evampi kho s±ti bhikkhu kevaµµaputto tehi bhikkh³hi samanuyuñjiyam±no samanug±hiyam±no samanubh±siyam±no tadeva p±paka½ diµµhigata½ th±mas± par±m±s± abhinivissa voharati– “eva½ by± kho aha½, ±vuso, bhagavat± dhamma½ desita½ ±j±n±mi yath± tadevida½ viññ±ºa½ sandh±vati sa½sarati anaññan”ti.

Yato kho te bhikkh³ n±sakkhi½su s±ti½ bhikkhu½ kevaµµaputta½ etasm± p±pak± diµµhigat± vivecetu½, atha kho te bhikkh³ yena bhagav± tenupasaªkami½su; upasaªkamitv± bhagavanta½ abhiv±detv± ekamanta½ nis²di½su. Ekamanta½ nisinn± kho te bhikkh³ bhagavanta½ etadavocu½– “s±tissa n±ma, bhante, bhikkhuno kevaµµaputtassa evar³pa½ p±paka½ diµµhigata½ uppanna½ ‘tath±ha½ bhagavat± dhamma½ desita½ ±j±n±mi yath± tadevida½ viññ±ºa½ sandh±vati sa½sarati, anaññan’ti. Assumha kho maya½, bhante, s±tissa kira n±ma bhikkhuno kevaµµaputtassa evar³pa½ p±paka½ diµµhigata½ uppanna½– ‘tath±ha½ bhagavat± dhamma½ desita½ ±j±n±mi yath± tadevida½ viññ±ºa½ sandh±vati sa½sarati, anaññan’ti. Atha kho maya½, bhante, yena s±ti bhikkhu kevaµµaputto tenupasaªkamimha; upasaªkamitv± s±ti½ bhikkhu½ kevaµµaputta½ etadavocumha– ‘sacca½ kira te, ±vuso s±ti, evar³pa½ p±paka½ diµµhigata½ uppanna½– “tath±ha½ bhagavat± dhamma½ desita½ ±j±n±mi yath± tadevida½ viññ±ºa½ sandh±vati sa½sarati, anaññan”ti? Evampi kho, bhante, s±ti bhikkhu kevaµµaputto amhehi samanuyuñjiyam±no samanug±hiyam±no samanubh±siyam±no tadeva p±paka½ diµµhigata½ th±mas± par±mas± abhinivissa voharati– ‘eva½ by± kho aha½, ±vuso, bhagavat± dhamma½ desita½ ±j±n±mi yath± tadevida½ viññ±ºa½ sandh±vati sa½sarati, anaññan’ti. Yato kho maya½, bhante, n±sakkhimha s±ti½ bhikkhu½ kevaµµaputta½ etasm± p±pak± diµµhigat± vivecetu½, atha maya½ etamattha½ bhagavato ±rocem±”ti.

Atha kho bhagav± aññatara½ bhikkhu½ ±mantesi– “ehi tva½ bhikkhu, mama vacanena s±ti½ bhikkhu½ kevaµµaputta½ ±mantehi– ‘satth± ta½, ±vuso s±ti, ±mantet²”’ti. “Eva½, bhante”ti kho so bhikkhu bhagavato paµissutv± yena s±ti bhikkhu kevaµµaputto tenupasaªkami; upasaªkamitv± s±ti½ bhikkhu½ kevaµµaputta½ etadavoca– “satth± ta½, ±vuso s±ti, ±mantet²”ti. “Evam±vuso”ti kho s±ti bhikkhu kevaµµaputto tassa bhikkhuno paµissutv± yena bhagav± tenupasaªkami; upasaªkamitv± bhagavanta½ abhiv±detv± ekamanta½ nis²di. Ekamanta½ nisinna½ kho s±ti½ bhikkhu½ kevaµµaputta½ bhagav± etadavoca– “sacca½ kira, te, s±ti, evar³pa½ p±paka½ diµµhigata½ uppanna½– ‘tath±ha½ bhagavat± dhamma½ desita½ ±j±n±mi yath± tadevida½ viññ±ºa½ sandh±vati sa½sarati, anañña”n’ti? “Eva½ by± kho aha½, bhante, bhagavat± dhamma½ desita½ ±j±n±mi yath± tadevida½ viññ±ºa½ sandh±vati sa½sarati, anaññan”ti. “Katama½ ta½, s±ti, viññ±ºan”ti? “Yv±ya½, bhante, vado vedeyyo tatra tatra kaly±ºap±pak±na½ kamm±na½ vip±ka½ paµisa½vedet²”ti. “Kassa nu kho n±ma tva½, moghapurisa, may± eva½ dhamma½ desita½ ±j±n±si? Nanu may±, moghapurisa, anekapariy±yena paµiccasamuppanna½ viññ±ºa½ vutta½, aññatra paccay± natthi viññ±ºassa sambhavoti? Atha ca pana tva½, moghapurisa, attan± duggahitena amhe ceva abbh±cikkhasi, att±nañca khaºasi, bahuñca apuñña½ pasavasi. Tañhi te, moghapurisa, bhavissati d²gharatta½ ahit±ya dukkh±y±”ti.
399. Atha kho bhagav± bhikkh³ ±mantesi– “ta½ ki½ maññatha, bhikkhave, api n±ya½ s±ti bhikkhu kevaµµaputto usm²katopi imasmi½ dhammavinaye”ti? “Kiñhi siy± bhante? No heta½, bhante”ti. Eva½ vutte, s±ti bhikkhu kevaµµaputto tuºh²bh³to maªkubh³to pattakkhandho adhomukho pajjh±yanto appaµibh±no nis²di. Atha kho bhagav± s±ti½ bhikkhu½ kevaµµaputta½ tuºh²bh³ta½ maªkubh³ta½ pattakkhandha½ adhomukha½ pajjh±yanta½ appaµibh±na½ viditv± s±ti½ bhikkhu½ kevaµµaputta½ etadavoca– “paññ±yissasi kho tva½, moghapurisa, etena sakena p±pakena diµµhigatena. Idh±ha½ bhikkh³ paµipucchiss±m²”ti. Atha kho bhagav± bhikkh³ ±mantesi– “tumhepi me, bhikkhave, eva½ dhamma½ desita½ ±j±n±tha yath±ya½ s±ti bhikkhu kevaµµaputto attan± duggahitena amhe ceva abbh±cikkhati, att±nañca khaºati, bahuñca apuñña½ pasavat²”ti? “No heta½, bhante! Anekapariy±yena hi no, bhante, paµiccasamuppanna½ viññ±ºa½ vutta½ bhagavat±, aññatra paccay± natthi viññ±ºassa sambhavo”ti. “S±dhu s±dhu, bhikkhave! S±dhu kho me tumhe, bhikkhave, eva½ dhamma½ desita½ ±j±n±tha. Anekapariy±yena hi vo, bhikkhave, paµiccasamuppanna½ viññ±ºa½ vutta½ may±, aññatra paccay± natthi viññ±ºassa sambhavoti. Atha ca pan±ya½ s±ti bhikkhu kevaµµaputto attan± duggahitena amhe ceva abbh±cikkhati, att±nañca khaºati, bahuñca apuñña½ pasavati pasavati. Tañhi tassa moghapurisassa bhavissati d²gharatta½ ahit±ya dukkh±ya.
400. “Ya½ yadeva, bhikkhave, paccaya½ paµicca uppajjati viññ±ºa½, tena teneva viññ±ºa½tveva saªkhya½ gacchati [saªkha½ gacchati (s². p².)]. Cakkhuñca paµicca r³pe ca uppajjati viññ±ºa½, cakkhuviññ±ºa½tveva saªkhya½ gacchati; sotañca paµicca sadde ca uppajjati viññ±ºa½, sotaviññ±ºa½tveva saªkhya½ gacchati; gh±nañca paµicca gandhe ca uppajjati viññ±ºa½, gh±naviññ±ºa½tveva saªkhya½ gacchati; jivhañca paµicca rase ca uppajjati viññ±ºa½, jivh±viññ±ºa½tveva saªkhya½ gacchati; k±yañca paµicca phoµµhabbe ca uppajjati viññ±ºa½, k±yaviññ±ºa½tveva saªkhya½ gacchati; manañca paµicca dhamme ca uppajjati viññ±ºa½, manoviññ±ºa½tveva saªkhya½ gacchati.
“Seyyath±pi, bhikkhave, ya½ yadeva paccaya½ paµicca aggi jalati tena teneva saªkhya½ gacchati. Kaµµhañca paµicca aggi jalati, kaµµhaggitveva saªkhya½ gacchati; sakalikañca paµicca aggi jalati, sakalikaggitveva saªkhya½ gacchati; tiºañca paµicca aggi jalati, tiºaggitveva saªkhya½ gacchati; gomayañca paµicca aggi jalati, gomayaggitveva saªkhya½ gacchati; thusañca paµicca aggi jalati, thusaggitveva saªkhya½ gacchati; saªk±rañca paµicca aggi jalati, saªk±raggitveva saªkhya½ gacchati. Evameva kho, bhikkhave, ya½ yadeva paccaya½ paµicca uppajjati viññ±ºa½, tena teneva saªkhya½ gacchati.
