175. Eva½ me suta½– eka½ samaya½ bhagav± sakkesu viharati kapilavatthusmi½ nigrodh±r±me. Atha kho mah±n±mo sakko yena bhagav± tenupasaªkami; upasaªkamitv± bhagavanta½ abhiv±detv± ekamanta½ nis²di. Ekamanta½ nisinno kho mah±n±mo sakko bhagavanta½ etadavoca– “d²gharatt±ha½, bhante, bhagavat± eva½ dhamma½ desita½ ±j±n±mi– ‘lobho cittassa upakkileso, doso cittassa upakkileso, moho cittassa upakkileso’ti. Evañc±ha½ [eva½p±ha½ (ka.)], bhante, bhagavat± dhamma½ desita½ ±j±n±mi– ‘lobho cittassa upakkileso, doso cittassa upakkileso, moho cittassa upakkileso’ti. Atha ca pana me ekad± lobhadhamm±pi citta½ pariy±d±ya tiµµhanti, dosadhamm±pi citta½ pariy±d±ya tiµµhanti, mohadhamm±pi citta½ pariy±d±ya tiµµhanti. Tassa mayha½, bhante, eva½ hoti– ‘kosu n±ma me dhammo ajjhatta½ appah²no yena me ekad± lobhadhamm±pi citta½ pariy±d±ya tiµµhanti, dosadhamm±pi citta½ pariy±d±ya tiµµhanti, mohadhamm±pi citta½ pariy±d±ya tiµµhant²”’ti.
176. “So eva kho te, mah±n±ma, dhammo ajjhatta½ appah²no yena te ekad± lobhadhamm±pi citta½ pariy±d±ya tiµµhanti, dosadhamm±pi citta½ pariy±d±ya tiµµhanti, mohadhamm±pi citta½ pariy±d±ya tiµµhanti. So ca hi te, mah±n±ma, dhammo ajjhatta½ pah²no abhavissa, na tva½ ag±ra½ ajjh±vaseyy±si, na k±me paribhuñjeyy±si. Yasm± ca kho te, mah±n±ma, so eva dhammo ajjhatta½ appah²no tasm± tva½ ag±ra½ ajjh±vasasi, k±me paribhuñjasi.
177. “‘Appass±d± k±m± bahudukkh± bahup±y±s±, ±d²navo [bah³p±y±s± (s². sy±. p².)] ettha bhiyyo’ti– iti cepi, mah±n±ma, ariyas±vakassa yath±bh³ta½ sammappaññ±ya sudiµµha½ hoti, so ca [sova (ka.)] aññatreva k±mehi aññatra akusalehi dhammehi p²tisukha½ n±dhigacchati, añña½ v± tato santatara½; atha kho so neva t±va an±vaµµ² k±mesu hoti. Yato ca kho, mah±n±ma, ariyas±vakassa ‘appass±d± k±m± bahudukkh± bahup±y±s±, ±d²navo ettha bhiyyo’ti– evameta½ yath±bh³ta½ sammappaññ±ya sudiµµha½ hoti, so ca aññatreva k±mehi aññatra akusalehi dhammehi p²tisukha½ adhigacchati añña½ v± tato santatara½; atha kho so an±vaµµ² k±mesu hoti.
“Mayhampi kho, mah±n±ma pubbeva sambodh±, anabhisambuddhassa bodhisattasseva sato, ‘appass±d± k±m± bahudukkh± bahup±y±s±, ±d²navo ettha bhiyyo’ti– evameta½ yath±bh³ta½ sammappaññ±ya sudiµµha½ hoti, so ca aññatreva k±mehi aññatra akusalehi dhammehi p²tisukha½ n±jjhagama½, añña½ v± tato santatara½; atha khv±ha½ neva t±va an±vaµµ² k±mesu paccaññ±si½. Yato ca kho me, mah±n±ma, ‘appass±d± k±m± bahudukkh± bahup±y±s±, ±d²navo ettha bhiyyo’ti– evameta½ yath±bh³ta½ sammappaññ±ya sudiµµha½ ahosi, so ca [sova (ka.)] aññatreva k±mehi aññatra akusalehi dhammehi p²tisukha½ ajjhagama½, añña½ v± tato santatara½; ath±ha½ an±vaµµ² k±mesu paccaññ±si½.
178. “Ko ca, mah±n±ma, k±m±na½ ass±do? Pañcime, mah±n±ma, k±maguº±. Katame pañca? Cakkhuviññeyy± r³p± iµµh± kant± man±p± piyar³p± k±m³pasa½hit± rajan²y±; sotaviññeyy± sadd±…pe… gh±naviññeyy± gandh±… jivh±viññeyy± ras±… k±yaviññeyy± phoµµhabb± iµµh± kant± man±p± piyar³p± k±m³pasa½hit± rajan²y±– ime kho, mah±n±ma, pañca k±maguº±. Ya½ kho, mah±n±ma, ime pañca k±maguºe paµicca uppajjati sukha½ somanassa½– aya½ k±m±na½ ass±do.
“Ko ca, mah±n±ma, k±m±na½ ±d²navo? Idha, mah±n±ma, kulaputto yena sippaµµh±nena j²vika½ kappeti– yadi mudd±ya yadi gaºan±ya yadi saªkh±nena yadi kasiy± yadi vaºijj±ya yadi gorakkhena yadi issatthena yadi r±japorisena yadi sippaññatarena, s²tassa purakkhato uºhassa purakkhato ¹a½samakasav±t±tapasar²½sapasamphassehi rissam±no khuppip±s±ya m²yam±no; ayampi, mah±n±ma, k±m±na½ ±d²navo sandiµµhiko dukkhakkhandho k±mahetu k±manid±na½ k±m±dhikaraºa½ k±m±nameva hetu.
“Tassa ce mah±n±ma kulaputtassa eva½ uµµhahato ghaµato v±yamato te bhog± n±bhinipphajjanti, so socati kilamati paridevati uratt±¼i½ kandati sammoha½ ±pajjati ‘mogha½ vata me uµµh±na½, aphalo vata me v±y±mo’ti. Ayampi, mah±n±ma, k±m±na½ ±d²navo sandiµµhiko dukkhakkhandho k±mahetu k±manid±na½ k±m±dhikaraºa½ k±m±nameva hetu.
“Tassa ce, mah±n±ma, kulaputtassa eva½ uµµhahato ghaµato v±yamato te bhog± abhinipphajjanti. So tesa½ bhog±na½ ±rakkh±dhikaraºa½ dukkha½ domanassa½ paµisa½vedeti– ‘kinti me bhoge neva r±j±no hareyyu½, na cor± hareyyu½, na aggi daheyya, na udaka½ vaheyya, na appiy± v± d±y±d± hareyyun’ti. Tassa eva½ ±rakkhato gopayato te bhoge r±j±no v± haranti, cor± v± haranti, aggi v± dahati, udaka½ v± vahati, appiy± v± d±y±d± haranti. So socati kilamati paridevati uratt±¼i½ kandati sammoha½ ±pajjati– ‘yampi me ahosi tampi no natth²’ti. Ayampi, mah±n±ma, k±m±na½ ±d²navo sandiµµhiko dukkhakkhandho k±mahetu k±manid±na½ k±m±dhikaraºa½ k±m±nameva hetu.
“Puna capara½, mah±n±ma, k±mahetu k±manid±na½ k±m±dhikaraºa½ k±m±nameva hetu r±j±nopi r±j³hi vivadanti, khattiy±pi khattiyehi vivadanti, br±hmaº±pi br±hmaºehi vivadanti, gahapat²pi gahapat²hi vivadanti, m±t±pi puttena vivadati, puttopi m±tar± vivadati, pit±pi puttena vivadati, puttopi pitar± vivadati, bh±t±pi bh±tar± vivadati, bh±t±pi bhaginiy± vivadati, bhagin²pi bh±tar± vivadati, sah±yopi sah±yena vivadati. Te tattha kalahaviggahaviv±d±pann± aññamañña½ p±º²hipi upakkamanti, le¹¹³hipi upakkamanti, daº¹ehipi upakkamanti, satthehipi upakkamanti. Te tattha maraºampi nigacchanti, maraºamattampi dukkha½ Ayampi, mah±n±ma, k±m±na½ ±d²navo sandiµµhiko dukkhakkhandho k±mahetu k±manid±na½ k±m±dhikaraºa½ k±m±nameva hetu.
“Puna capara½, mah±n±ma, k±mahetu k±manid±na½ k±m±dhikaraºa½ k±m±nameva hetu asicamma½ gahetv±, dhanukal±pa½ sannayhitv±, ubhatoby³¼ha½ saªg±ma½ pakkhandanti us³supi khippam±nesu, satt²supi khippam±n±su, as²supi vijjotalantesu. Te tattha us³hipi vijjhanti, sattiy±pi vijjhanti, asin±pi s²sa½ chindanti. Te tattha maraºampi nigacchanti, maraºamattampi dukkha½. Ayampi, mah±n±ma, k±m±na½ ±d²navo sandiµµhiko dukkhakkhandho k±mahetu k±manid±na½ k±m±dhikaraºa½ k±m±nameva hetu.

Te tattha us³hipi vijjhanti, sattiy±pi vijjhanti, chakaºak±yapi osiñcanti, abhivaggenapi omaddanti, asin±pi s²sa½ chindanti. Te tattha maraºampi nigacchanti, maraºamattampi dukkha½. Te k±yena duccarita½ caritv±, v±c±ya duccarita½ caritv±, manas± duccarita½ caritv±, k±yassa bhed± para½ maraº±, ap±ya½ duggati½ vinip±ta½ niraya½ upapajjanti. Ayampi, mah±n±ma, k±m±na½ ±d²navo sampar±yiko dukkhakkhandho k±mahetu k±manid±na½ k±m±dhikaraºa½ k±m±nameva hetu.
179. “Ekamid±ha½, mah±n±ma, samaya½ r±jagahe vihar±mi gijjhak³µe pabbate. Tena kho pana samayena sambahul± nigaºµh± [niganth± (sy±. ka.)] isigilipasse k±¼asil±ya½ ubbhaµµhak± honti ±sanapaµikkhitt±, opakkamik± dukkh± tibb± khar± kaµuk± vedan± vedayanti. Atha khv±ha½, mah±n±ma, s±yanhasamaya½ paµisall±n± vuµµhito yena isigilipasse k±¼asil± yena te nigaºµh± tenupasaªkami½; upasaªkamitv± te nigaºµhe etadavoca½– ‘kinnu tumhe, ±vuso, nigaºµh± ubbhaµµhak± ±sanapaµikkhitt±, opakkamik± dukkh± tibb± khar± kaµuk± vedan± vedayath±’ti? Eva½ vutte, mah±n±ma, te nigaºµh± ma½ etadavocu½– ‘nigaºµho, ±vuso, n±µaputto [n±thaputto (s². p².)] sabbaññ³ sabbadass±v² aparisesa½ ñ±ºadassana½ paµij±n±ti– “carato ca me tiµµhato ca suttassa ca j±garassa ca satata½ samita½ ñ±ºadassana½ paccupaµµhitan”ti. So evam±ha– “atthi kho vo [atthi kho bho (sy±. ka.)], nigaºµh±, pubbe p±pakamma½ kata½, ta½ im±ya kaµuk±ya dukkarak±rik±ya nijj²retha [nijjaretha (s². sy±. p².)]; ya½ panettha [maya½ panettha (ka.)] etarahi k±yena sa½vut± v±c±ya sa½vut± manas± sa½vut± ta½ ±yati½ p±passa kammassa akaraºa½; iti pur±º±na½ kamm±na½ tapas± byantibh±v±, nav±na½ kamm±na½ akaraº±, ±yati½ anavassavo; ±yati½ anavassav± kammakkhayo, kammakkhay± dukkhakkhayo, dukkhakkhay± vedan±kkhayo, vedan±kkhay± sabba½ dukkha½ nijjiººa½ bhavissat²”ti. “‘Iti kira tumhe, ±vuso nigaºµh±, na j±n±tha– ahuvamheva maya½ pubbe na n±huvamh±ti, na j±n±tha– akaramheva maya½ pubbe p±pakamma½ na n±karamh±ti, na j±n±tha– evar³pa½ v± evar³pa½ v± p±pakamma½ akaramh±ti, na j±n±tha– ettaka½ v± dukkha½ nijjiººa½, ettaka½ v± dukkha½ nijj²retabba½, ettakamhi v± dukkhe nijjiººe sabba½ dukkha½ nijjiººa½ bhavissat²ti. Eva½ sante, ±vuso nigaºµh±, ye loke ludd± lohitap±ºino kur³rakammant± manussesu pacc±j±t± te nigaºµhesu pabbajant²’ti? ‘Na kho, ±vuso gotama, sukhena sukha½ adhigantabba½, dukkhena kho sukha½ adhigantabba½; sukhena c±vuso gotama, sukha½ adhigantabba½ abhavissa, r±j± m±gadho seniyo bimbis±ro sukha½ adhigaccheyya, r±j± m±gadho seniyo bimbis±ro sukhavih±ritaro ±yasmat± gotamen±’ti.
“‘Addh±yasmantehi nigaºµhehi sahas± appaµisaªkh± v±c± bh±sit±– na kho, ±vuso gotama, sukhena sukha½ adhigantabba½, dukkhena kho sukha½ adhigantabba½; sukhena c±vuso gotama, sukha½ adhigantabba½ abhavissa, r±j± m±gadho seniyo bimbis±ro sukha½ adhigaccheyya, r±j± m±gadho seniyo bimbis±ro sukhavih±ritaro ±yasmat± gotamen±”ti. Api ca ahameva tattha paµipucchitabbo– ko nu kho ±yasmant±na½ sukhavih±ritaro r±j± v± m±gadho seniyo bimbis±ro ±yasm± v± gotamo’ti? Addh±vuso gotama, amhehi sahas± appaµisaªkh± v±c± bh±sit±, na kho, ±vuso gotama, sukhena sukha½ adhigantabba½, dukkhena kho sukha½ adhigantabba½; sukhena c±vuso gotama, sukha½ adhigantabba½ abhavissa, r±j± m±gadho seniyo bimbis±ro sukha½ adhigaccheyya, r±j± m±gadho seniyo bimbis±ro sukhavih±ritaro ±yasmat± gotamen±ti. Api ca tiµµhateta½, id±nipi maya½ ±yasmanta½ gotama½ pucch±ma– ko nu kho ±yasmant±na½ sukhavih±ritaro r±j± v± m±gadho seniyo bimbis±ro ±yasm± v± gotamo’ti?
“‘Tena h±vuso nigaºµh±, tumheva tattha paµipucchiss±mi, yath± vo khameyya tath± na½ by±kareyy±tha. Ta½ ki½ maññath±vuso nigaºµh±, pahoti r±j± m±gadho seniyo bimbis±ro, aniñjam±no k±yena, abh±sam±no v±ca½, satta rattindiv±ni ekantasukha½ paµisa½ved² viharitun’ti? ‘No hida½, ±vuso’.
“‘Ta½ ki½ maññath±vuso nigaºµh±, pahoti r±j± m±gadho seniyo bimbis±ro, aniñjam±no k±yena, abh±sam±no v±ca½, cha rattindiv±ni…pe… pañca rattindiv±ni… catt±ri rattindiv±ni… t²ºi rattindiv±ni… dve rattindiv±ni… eka½ rattindiva½ ekantasukha½ paµisa½ved² viharitun’ti? ‘No hida½, ±vuso’.
