Ya½ paneta½ arahant±na½ vaµµadukkhasamucchedasaªkh±ta½ samucchedamaraºa½, saªkh±r±na½ khaºabhaªgasaªkh±ta½ khaºikamaraºa½, rukkho mato loha½ matanti-±d²su sammutimaraºañca, na ta½ idha adhippeta½.
Yampi ceta½ adhippeta½, ta½ k±lamaraºa½ ak±lamaraºanti duvidha½ hoti. Tattha k±lamaraºa½ puññakkhayena v± ±yukkhayena v± ubhayakkhayena v± hoti. Ak±lamaraºa½ kammupacchedakakammavasena.
Tattha ya½ vijjam±n±yapi ±yusant±najanakapaccayasampattiy± kevala½ paµisandhijanakassa kammassa vipakkavip±katt± maraºa½ hoti, ida½ puññakkhayena maraºa½ n±ma. Ya½ gatik±l±h±r±disampattiy± abh±vena ajjatanak±lapuris±na½ viya vassasatamattaparim±ºassa ±yuno khayavasena maraºa½ hoti, ida½ ±yukkhayena maraºa½ n±ma. Ya½ pana d³s²m±rakal±bur±j±d²na½ viya taªkhaºaññeva µh±n±c±vanasamatthena kammun± upacchinnasant±n±na½, purimakammavasena v± satthaharaº±d²hi upakkamehi upacchijjam±nasant±n±na½ maraºa½ hoti, ida½ ak±lamaraºa½ n±ma. 168. Ta½ bh±vetuk±mena rahogatena paµisall²nena “maraºa½ bhavissati, j²vitindriya½ upacchijjissat²”ti v±, “maraºa½ maraºan”ti v± yoniso manasik±ro pavattetabbo. Ayoniso pavattayato hi iµµhajanamaraº±nussaraºe soko uppajjati vij±tam±tuy± piyaputtamaraº±nussaraºe viya. Aniµµhajanamaraº±nussaraºe p±mojja½ uppajjati ver²na½ verimaraº±nussaraºe viya. Majjhattajanamaraº±nussaraºe sa½vego na uppajjati mataka¼evaradassane chava¹±hakassa viya. Attano maraº±nussaraºe sant±so uppajjati ukkhitt±sika½ vadhaka½ disv± bh²rukaj±tikassa viya. Eva½ pavattento hi yoniso pavatteti, up±yena pavattet²ti attho. Eva½ pavattayatoyeva hi ekaccassa n²varaº±ni vikkhambhanti, maraº±rammaº± sati saºµh±ti, upac±rappattameva kammaµµh±na½ hoti.
169. Yassa pana ett±vat± na hoti, tena vadhakapaccupaµµh±nato, sampattivipattito, upasa½haraºato, k±yabahus±dh±raºato, ±yudubbalato, animittato, addh±naparicchedato, khaºaparittatoti imehi aµµhah±k±rehi maraºa½ anussaritabba½.
Tattha vadhakapaccupaµµh±natoti vadhakassa viya paccupaµµh±nato. Yath± hi imassa s²sa½ chindiss±m²ti asi½ gahetv± g²v±ya c±rayam±no vadhako paccupaµµhitova hoti, eva½ maraºampi paccupaµµhitamev±ti anussaritabba½. Kasm±? Saha j±tiy± ±gatato, j²vitaharaºato ca. Tattheva j±yanti j²yanti m²yanti, ucc±rapass±va½ karonti. K±yova nesa½ s³tigharañceva gil±nas±l± ca sus±nañca vaccakuµi ca pass±vadoºik± ca. Yath± hi catumah±pathe µhapite lakkhamhi sabbadis±hi ±gat± sarasattitomarap±s±º±dayo nipatanti, eva½ k±yepi sabbupaddav± nipatanti Sv±ya½ tesampi upaddav±na½ nip±tena maraºa½ nigacchatiyeva. Tadeta½ ass±sapass±s±na½ samavuttita½ labham±nameva pavattati. Bahi nikkhantan±sikav±te pana anto apavisante, paviµµhe v± anikkhamante mato n±ma hoti. Catunna½ iriy±path±nampi samavuttita½ labham±nameva pavattati. Aññataraññatarassa pana adhimattat±ya ±yusaªkh±r± upacchijjanti. S²tuºh±nampi samavuttita½ labham±nameva pavattati. Atis²tena pana ati-uºhena v± abhibh³tassa vipajjati. Mah±bh³t±nampi samavuttita½ labham±nameva pavattati. Pathav²dh±tuy± pana ±podh±tu-±d²na½ v± aññataraññatarassa pakopena balasampannopi puggalo patthaddhak±yo v± atis±r±divasena kilinnap³tik±yo v± mah±¹±hapareto v± sambhijjam±nasandhibandhano v± hutv± j²vitakkhaya½ p±puº±ti. 174. Animittatoti avavatth±nato, paricched±bh±vatoti attho. Satt±na½ hi–
J²vita½ by±dhi k±lo ca, dehanikkhepana½ gati;
pañcete j²valokasmi½, animitt± na n±yare.
Tattha j²vita½ t±va “ettakameva j²vitabba½, na ito paran”ti vavatth±n±bh±vato animitta½ Kalalak±lepi hi satt± maranti, abbudapesighanam±sikadvem±satem±sacatum±sapañcam±sadasam±sak±lepi. Kucchito nikkhantasamayepi. Tato para½ vassasatassa antopi bahipi marantiyeva. By±dhipi “imin±va by±dhin± satt± maranti, n±ññen±”ti vavatth±n±bh±vato animitto. Cakkhurogen±pi hi satt± maranti, sotarog±d²na½ aññataren±pi. K±lopi “imasmi½yeva k±le maritabba½, n±ññasmin”ti eva½ vavatth±n±bh±vato animitto. Pubbaºhepi hi satt± maranti, majjhanhik±d²na½ aññatarasmimpi. Dehanikkhepanampi “idheva m²yam±n±na½ dehena patitabba½, n±ññatr±”ti eva½ vavatth±n±bh±vato animitta½. Antog±me j±t±na½ hi bahig±mepi attabh±vo patati. Bahig±me j±t±nampi antog±me. Tath± thalaj±na½ v± jale, jalaj±na½ v± thaleti anekappak±rato vitth±retabba½. Gatipi “ito cutena idha nibbattitabban”ti eva½ vavatth±n±bh±vato animitt±. Devalokato hi cut± manussesupi nibbattanti, manussalokato cut± devalok±d²nampi yattha katthaci nibbattant²ti eva½ yantayuttagoºo viya gatipañcake loko samparivattat²ti eva½ animittato maraºa½ anussaritabba½.
175. Addh±naparicchedatoti manuss±na½ j²vitassa n±ma etarahi paritto addh±. Yo cira½ j²vati, so vassasata½, appa½ v± bhiyyo. Ten±ha bhagav±– “appamida½, bhikkhave, manuss±na½ ±yu, gaman²yo sampar±yo, kattabba½ kusala½, caritabba½ brahmacariya½, natthi j±tassa amaraºa½. Yo, bhikkhave, cira½ j²vati, so vassasata½, appa½ v± bhiyyoti.
Appam±yumanuss±na½, h²¼eyya na½ suporiso;
careyy±dittas²sova, natthi maccussa n±gamoti. (Sa½. ni. 1.145).
Aparampi ±ha– “bh³tapubba½, bhikkhave, arako n±ma satth± ahos²”ti sabbampi sattahi upam±hi alaªkata½ sutta½ vitth±retabba½.
Aparampi ±ha– “yoc±ya½, bhikkhave, bhikkhu eva½ maraºassati½ bh±veti, aho vat±ha½ rattindiva½ j²veyya½, bhagavato s±sana½ manasikareyya½, bahu½ vata me kata½ ass±ti. Yoc±ya½, bhikkhave, bhikkhu eva½ maraºassati½ bh±veti aho vat±ha½ divasa½ j²veyya½, bhagavato s±sana½ manasikareyya½, bahu½ vata me kata½ ass±ti. Yo c±ya½, bhikkhave, bhikkhu eva½ maraºassati½ bh±veti, aho vat±ha½ tadantara½ j²veyya½, yadantara½ eka½ piº¹ap±ta½ bhuñj±mi, bhagavato s±sana½ manasikareyya½, bahu½ vata me kata½ ass±ti. Ime vuccanti, bhikkhave, bhikkh³ pamatt± viharanti, dandha½ maraºassati½ bh±venti ±sav±na½ khay±ya. Yo ca khv±ya½, bhikkhave, bhikkhu eva½ maraºassati½ bh±veti, aho vat±ha½ tadantara½ j²veyya½, yadantara½ eka½ ±lopa½ saªkh±ditv± ajjhohar±mi, bhagavato s±sana½ manasikareyya½, bahu½ vata me kata½ ass±ti. Yo c±ya½, bhikkhave, bhikkhu eva½ maraºassati½ bh±veti, aho vat±ha½ tadantara½ j²veyya½, yadantara½ assasitv± v± passas±mi, passasitv± v± assas±mi, bhagavato s±sana½ manasikareyya½, bahu½ vata me kata½ ass±ti. Ime vuccanti, bhikkhave, bhikkh³ appamatt± viharanti, tikkha½ maraºassati½ bh±venti ±sav±na½ khay±y±”ti (a. ni. 6.19). Eva½ catupañc±lopasaªkh±danamatta½ aviss±siyo paritto j²vitassa addh±ti eva½ addh±naparicchedato maraºa½ anussaritabba½.
176. Khaºaparittatoti paramatthato hi atiparitto satt±na½ j²vitakkhaºo ekacittappavattimattoyeva. Yath± n±ma rathacakka½ pavattam±nampi ekeneva nemippadesena pavattati, tiµµham±nampi ekeneva tiµµhati, evameva ekacittakkhaºika½ satt±na½ j²vita½. Tasmi½ citte niruddhamatte satto niruddhoti vuccati. Yath±ha– “at²te cittakkhaºe j²vittha, na j²vati, na j²vissati. An±gate cittakkhaºe na j²vittha, na j²vati, j²vissati. Paccuppanne cittakkhaºe na j²vittha, j²vati, na j²vissati.
“J²vita½ attabh±vo ca, sukhadukkh± ca keval±;
ekacittasam±yutt±, lahu so vattate khaºo.
“Ye niruddh± marantassa, tiµµham±nassa v± idha;
sabbepi sadis± khandh±, gat± appaµisandhik±.
“Anibbattena na j±to, paccuppannena j²vati;
cittabhaªg± mato loko, paññatti paramatthiy±”ti. (Mah±ni. 39).

177. Iti imesa½ aµµhanna½ ±k±r±na½ aññataraññatarena anussaratopi punappuna½ manasik±ravasena citta½ ±sevana½ labhati, maraº±rammaº± sati santiµµhati, n²varaº±ni vikkhambhanti, jh±naªg±ni p±tubhavanti. Sabh±vadhammatt± pana sa½vejan²yatt± ca ±rammaºassa appana½ appatv± upac±rappattameva jh±na½ hoti. Lokuttarajjh±na½ pana dutiyacatutth±ni ca ±ruppajjh±n±ni sabh±vadhammepi bh±van±visesena appana½ p±puºanti. Visuddhibh±van±nukkamavasena hi lokuttara½ appana½ p±puº±ti. ¾rammaº±tikkamabh±van±vasena ±ruppa½. Appan±pattasseva hi jh±nassa ±rammaºasamatikkamanamatta½ tattha hoti. Idha pana tadubhayampi natthi. Tasm± upac±rappattameva jh±na½ hoti. Tadeta½ maraºassatibalena uppannatt± maraºassaticceva saªkha½ gacchati.
Imañca pana maraºassati½ anuyutto bhikkhu satata½ appamatto hoti, sabbabhavesu anabhiratisañña½ paµilabhati, j²vitanikanti½ jah±ti, p±pagarah² hoti, asannidhibahulo parikkh±resu vigatamalamacchero, aniccasaññ± cassa paricaya½ gacchati, tadanus±reneva dukkhasaññ± anattasaññ± ca upaµµh±ti. Yath± abh±vitamaraº± satt± sahas± v±¼amigayakkhasappacoravadhak±bhibh³t± viya maraºasamaye bhaya½ sant±sa½ sammoha½ ±pajjanti, eva½ an±pajjitv± abhayo asamm³¼ho k±la½ karoti. Sace diµµheva dhamme amata½ n±r±dheti, k±yassa bhed± sugatipar±yano hoti.
