Sattasu hi µh±nesu k±laparicchedo n±ma natthi, paµhamappan±ya½, lokiy±bhiññ±su, cat³su maggesu, magg±nantare phale, r³p±r³pabhavesu bhavaªgaµµh±ne nirodhassa paccaye nevasaññ±n±saññ±yatane nirodh± vuµµhahantassa phalasam±pattiyanti. Etesu hi katthaci ati-ittar±, katthaci appam±º± cittakkhaº± honti, katthaci sampuººajavanav²thi addh± labbhati. N±ya½ doso bhavanakiriy±ya paccavekkhaºahetukatt±. Na hi asati paccavekkhaºe s± hoti nirodhassa paccayabh³tajh±nantaramiva, sati pana paccavekkhaºe s± hoti, tasm± anvayabyatirekavasena labbhati. Tass± paccavekkhaºahetukat±ti na na yujjati “paccavekkhaºahetukan”ti vacana½. Paccavekkhaºahetuka½ ±vajjananti v± sambandho. ¾vajjanañhi paccavekkhaºañ±º±na½ anantarapaccayabh±vena k±raºa½ hoti.

Tattha pubbabh±gapaµipad±vasena jh±nassa paripanthato visujjhana½ paµipad±visuddhi n±ma, s± pana yasm± jh±nassa upp±dakkhaºe labbhati, tasm± vutta½ “paµipad±visuddhi ±d²”ti. Visodhetabbat±d²na½ abh±vato jh±napariy±pann±ya tatramajjhattupekkh±ya kiccanipphattiy± anubr³han± upekkh±nubr³han± n±ma. S± pan±ya½ visesato jh±nassa µhitikkhaºe labbhati. Tena vutta½ “upekkh±nubr³han± majjhe”ti. Tattha dhamm±na½ anativattan±dis±dhakassa ñ±ºassa kiccanipphattivasena pariyodapan± sampaha½san± n±ma. Abhayagiriv±sino “paµipad±visuddhi n±ma sasambh±riko upac±ro, upekkh±nubr³han± n±ma appan±, sampaha½san± n±ma paccavekkhaº±”ti (visuddhi. 1.75) eva½ paµipad±visuddhi-±dike vaººenti, ta½ ayutta½. Evañhi sati ajh±nadhammehi jh±nadhammassa guºasa½kittana½ n±ma kata½ hoti. Na hi bh³mantara½ bh³mantarapariy±panna½ hoti, anto-appan±yameva ±gamanavasena paµipad±visuddhi, tatramajjhattupekkh±ya kiccanipphatti-±d²hi upekkh±nubr³han±dayo ca veditabb±. Evañca katv± vutta½ bhagavat± “ekattagata½ citta½ paµipad±visuddhipakkhantarañceva hoti upekkh±nubr³hitañca ñ±ºena sampaha½sitan”ti (paµi. ma. 1.158). Ettha hi ekattagata½ cittanti indriy±na½ ekarasabh±vena, ekaggat±ya ca sikhappattiy± tadanuguºa-ekattagata½ sasampayuttamappan±citta½, tasseva paµipad±visuddhipakkhandan±di pakkhantara½ vuccati.
Dasalakkhaºasa½yutanti “±dimhi t²ºi lakkhaº±ni, majjhe t²ºi, pariyos±ne catt±r²”ti eva½ dasaparim±ºehi appan±ya lakkhitabbabh±vena lakkhaºasaªkh±tehi paripanthato visuddhijh±n±d²hi sa½yutta½. Vuttañheta½–
“Paµhamassa jh±nassa paµipad±visuddhi ±di. ¾dissa kati lakkhaº±ni? ¾dissa t²ºi lakkhaº±ni. Yo tassa paripantho, tato citta½ visujjhati, visuddhatt± citta½ majjhima½ samathanimitta½ paµipajjati, paµipannatt± tattha citta½ pakkhandati, yañca paripanthato citta½ visujjhati, yañca visuddhatt± citta½ majjhima½ samathanimitta½ paµipajjati, yañca paµipannatt± tattha citta½ pakkhandati, paµhamassa jh±nassa paµipad±visuddhi ±di, ±dissa im±ni t²ºi lakkhaº±ni. Tena vuccati paµhama½ jh±na½ ±dikaly±ºañceva hoti lakkhaºasampannañca.
“Paµhamassa jh±nassa upekkh±nubr³han± majjhe, majjhassa kati lakkhaº±ni? Majjhassa t²ºi lakkhaº±ni. Visuddha½ citta½ ajjhupekkhati, samathapaµipanna½ ajjhupekkhati ekattupaµµh±na½ ajjhupekkhati, yañca visuddha½ citta½ ajjhupekkhati, yañca samathapaµipanna½ ajjhupekkhati, yañca ekattupaµµh±na½ ajjhupekkhati, paµhamassa jh±nassa upekkh±nubr³han± majjhe, majjhassa im±ni t²ºi lakkhaº±ni.
